The first Sudoko problem is easy to do by hand. The other Sudoku ones were designed so that they couldn’t even be solved easily by a Sudoko solver program, such as http://www.sudoku-solutions.com/ . Those are all based on the little known fact that no Sudoko with 16 entries has a unique solution. So they were derived using the web list of all Sudokus with 17 entries, suitably disguised of course.

The geometric dissection ones are truly state-of-the-art. The world expert on geometric dissections is Gavin Theobold. http://home.btconnect.com/GavinTheobald/HTML/Index.html He could solve them all, but I don’t know anyone else in the world who could.

The wikipedia entry on additive subrandom numbers based on the golden ratio was written by me. So the codebreaker follows no previously-used code system. Even still, I’d be willing to bet that a top of the line code-breaking program could eventually crack it.

The anagrams were deliberately designed to be unsolvable by Andy’s anagram solver www.ssynth.co.uk/~gay/anagram.html
The answer to number 15 is one of my ancestors.

As for the “next number in this sequence”, they’re not intended to be any easier than the other problems, but the answer 1,2,3,4,29 is definitely findable for anyone who has done a Uni Course on numerical methods.

codes in theory are used in a way to stop cracking, you don’t use the same code to transmit the same message. the more message the more chance to crack the code. also you don’t keep saying the same things inside the secret message , this allows another avenue to break the code.

as for transmission it makes me wonder if the whole quantum entanglement thing has been cracked and is already being used. an operator of a device might not know where or how a message is coming to him. messages are still encoded but unknown to him the device can’t be listened into for the moment.

the telescope for example was actually an official secret, the british had been using it to watch the channel for quite some time before galileo or anyone else in Europe had come up with the telescope. they found the official secret regarding the telescope in some vault a few years ago.

The code I use is equivalent to an enigma cypher with a single simple wheel, but a wheel that turns an irrational multiple of 2pi with each pressed key, then choosing the nearest whole number (modulo 36) to the irrational number.
