Subject: Dog Years

So, does one human year equal 7 dog years? It’s a lot more varied than that, with smaller dogs living longer than olders dogs, after first ageing more quickly then slowing down. Interesting article:

>……Nobody knows where the seven dog years to one human year theory came from or at least no-one is claiming responsibility for it. It first appeared in maths text books in the 1960s and questions were set asking children to calculate the age of a dog using the 7:1 ratio.

For the dog species as a whole it’s not a bad estimate at all.

If you factor in the varying rates of ageing in early part of a dog’s life and the differing life expectancies a more accurate estimate across all breeds would be six dogs years to one human year.

However if you look at opposing ends of the spectrum a Bulldog will age an average of 13 years per human year whereas for a Miniature Dachshund it’s just over four years….<

For my dog it is about a 1:1 ratio. She’s nearly four, and acts it :)

No. A more accurate guide than that has been around for many years, based on developmental milestones such as age at first walking on all fours, age at puberty, cognitive development.

Here’s an example: http://www.calculatorcat.com/dogs/dog-years-human-years-graph.gif

By the way, I posted something on this recently. Let’s see if I can find it.

Compare the line for “carnivores” to that for “humans”.

What odd things to say.

Some people don’t like dogs, some dogs don’t like people. I don’t like all the dogs i’ve met, and i certainly don’t like all the people i’ve met, and i don’t see why we should expect dogs to do different. As far as ‘trust’ goes, it’s something that has to be earnt by both parties in any meeting, whether they’re a dog or a person, and it’s a thing that both dogs and people learn, by experience, to award more cautiously as years go by.

‘Hate’, when it’s not a manufactured or inculcated emotion, is also something that has to be earnt. There are very few people who i ‘hate’, and i don’t wish any of them to die. Apart from a wish like that probably making me as bad or worse than them, i’ve learnt that death is often horrible, never dignified, and always quite final. Anyway, for some of them, i think that greater punishment for them is that they go on living.

All that said, cats are a waste of space.

Agreed.

Also, I love dogs but there are dogs even I don’t like. And Jas, she’s terribly biased against some dogs. Staffies, for example.

The phrase ‘cat people’ always makes me think of that old movie ‘The Curse of the Cat People’.

I’m happy with what cats think of me.

;)

Cats, in my book, have their place, and it is out in the jungle being sleek and wild killing machines. But I’m happy enough for those who like their company (bearing in mind that cat’s are not owned, but keep the human as a servant) to have them in their own house. And confined to their own yard. I don’t understand the discrimination of requiring dog owners to contain their animals but not cat owners.

I don’t have a particular preference either way for dogs or cats.

I did have a cat choose me once and would not leave my side. I random cat out of the blue.

I found him a home with family so he could live out a happy life in comfort.

I still see him sometimes while on holiday.

Right then, I need to get the mower out, fuel it up. And wait for 9 o’clock to start it. I can do some rose pruning while I wait for the clock to work its way around.

Cats should be locked up in a cat run or kept as a house cat. IMHO.

Wild dogs also cause harm in the bushland.

There is a sensible case to state for sensible pet ownership regardless of the what pet you would like to add to the family group.

Most people in my street have a cat. Living so close to parkland and marsh, we all get a few mice every year. Good in theory, but the people I’ve talked to say their cat ignores the mice anyway.

Why would a cat chase mice when the lizards and birds in Australia have not evolved to know about cats?

I was chatting to the neighbour last night and he mentioned that we have heaps of snakes in our backyard, lovely pythons he said. I’m yet to see one and look forward to the moment.

I’m a lover of most animals and a big fan of responsible pet ownership.

In this city we have to contain our cats – mine are indoor goddesses. We go for walkies on a leash sometimes.

I don’t know of anywhere in Australia where that is the case. There are curfews for them to be inside after dark, but no requirement for them to remain on-property. And the curfews are ignored, mostly.

I think we as a species owe a lot to our canine friends, I think that our ancestors used dogs to help in their hunt for food, and that dogs were drawn to their camp fires for food warmth and companionship at the end of the day. Modern dogs can be very protective of human young, and will put up with all sorts of indignities from them that would earn a growl or nip for an adult human.

possibly, but the owners seem to like the rewards of lap sitting and internet acknowledgement.
