Subject: Joe Farman, original ozone warner, dies

Joe Farman, who has died aged 82, was the leader of a small group of scientists who made one of the most important discoveries in recent history. In 1985, they published a landmark paper on the ozone layer, the protective skin that filters the sun’s ultraviolet rays and without which the rays can cause cancers and eye damage. Their research showed that the ozone layer was being rapidly depleted over the Antarctic.

Arguably, his work saved millions of lives.

Must be satisfying to have that on that your gravestone. But maybe without the “arguably”.

There are rumblings that banning the CFCs did jack and that the hole is the same size now or even bigger.
That’s what I heard down at the pub.

Arguably, a further delayed response to ozone depletion would have meant the hole would have been more intense, and lasted longer, in populated areas. Around 100 000 people die per year from skin cancers at present. Phil reckons a 1% decrease in ozone coverage results in a 2% increase in the skin cancer related death rate: ie a general depletion of 10% could be expected to cause an extra 2 million deaths over the coming century.

Of course, even without Farman’s work it is hard to imagine a scenario in which the ozone hole continued to be denied past the mid-nineties, say.

We don’t get to rerun the experiment, so … “arguably”.

I had a skin cancer cut out last year. It was on the back of my hand. I’m not that prone to wearing gloves every time I’m outside.

I suspect I have another one on the top of my ear, and had better get around to making a doctards appointment.
