How does this sound as a weight loss diet, to be maintained for as long as it takes to lose substantial weight? Would it provide adequate nutrients?

Fish, fruit, leaves & wine.

Fish (fresh or tinned, up to around 500gm daily)
Fruit (plain raw fruit, in moderation)
Leaves (any kind of edible leaves, as much as you like, raw or steamed)
Wine (ordinary bottled wine, in moderation)

+ tea & coffee with skim milk.

No problem with enough nutrients in that diet.

I’d count it as greens.

If yoghurt is OK in moderation in a weight loss diet, this could be attractively renamed as:

GLYFF (glyph)

(garlic, leaves, yoghurt, fish, fruit)

This is why we expert diet book writers specify “moderation”.

Anyway wine isn’t even mentioned in the GLYFF diet (garlic, leaves, yoghurt, fish, fruit).

There could even be a daily diet meal delivery service called HIRE-A-GLYFF.

Seems to me you won’t be feeling sated on that diet. Throw in some nuts or brown rice as well.

Well, I was tempted to say put an S for seeds on the end of GLYFF. but then I usually wait for someone else to bring it up, these days.

And if garlic can be counted as a fruit in this diet then brandy can be counted as wine?

Leaves (any kind of edible leaves, as much as you like, raw or steamed)
Wine (ordinary bottled wine, in moderation)

Not bad. I’d add vegetables to that – carrot, potato, pumpkin, greens etc.

Among the fish, I particularly go for sardines and/or mackerel in order to get the minerals: calcium, iron etc. that are missing from filleted fish and tuna, as well as all the other foods you’ve listed.

Leaves are vegetables…IIRC as in green vegetables. I might be wrong, because…well…I’m not a scientist or anything.

See if you had an I-phone you could just stand on that, and you wouldn’t need scales.

I found when on a diet (“Weight Watchers no points” which lasted 5 years) that I got really really hungry at times. Chewing gum wasn’t sufficient as it gave me a sore throat. Hot food is a big help, even if it’s just heating up fruit in a microwave. I got to the point of chewing rawhide to keep the hunger at bay.

I don’t want to say more, but can’t resist saying that I think the Weight Watchers diet is much better than the CSIRO one. The WW one is largely based on the three principles of promoting whole unprocessed foods such as fruit, vegetables and lean meat, avoiding all forms of fat (except in very limited amounts) and avoiding foods that are known to cause cravings (eg. white bread). Of those on your list, only avocados, fish tinned in oil, and wine are limited in intake. Dried fruits are not allowed.

My weight loss plan last year (I lost 11kgs in 3 months) was easy:
-Exercise every day
-Don’t eat junk (hard at work when I’m surrounded by junk food so I brought my own lunch to have at 4pm which is when hunger kicked in).

There were occasional bending of the rules: a bit of chocolate when I felt like it (which wasn’t often, surprisingly, and it prevents bingeing) and healthier options of favourite foods, like nachos (baked tortilla chips, less meat, more kidney beans, no sour cream).

I’m thinking of having another cup of tea, the people who have Tritonasaurus Rex hostage have rung to say they need to machine the brakes and put new pads on and a few other odds and ends to do that will take the service to well over a grand.
Yeah, I’ll have another cuppa, I’d do a few lines of bex if there was an old boilers butt available.

I thought that the current wisdom is: in general diets don’t work in the long run.

You do better just eating a bit more sensibly, smaller portions, cut right down on the junk and move a bit more.

This is not a long run diet, it’s a weight loss diet. I need to lose about oooh, 40kg at a guess (I’ll have a clearer idea when I get the scales :)). Portion size, self control and exercise will be relevant during this phase but actual choice of food types will also be very important.

When I’m slim again, the focus will be on portion size, self control and exercise, with a normal wide range of foods being permissible.

This is not a long run diet, it’s a weight loss diet.

I mean that people generally will lose a lot of weight but then gradually put it all back on.

I’m not one of those people who are naturally fat. It’s very much a middle-aged thing that I’m sure can be overcome.
