Subject: New Light on Neanderthal Extinction

A major conference in London this week (6-8th June) will reveal the results of five years’ research on why Homo sapiens emerged triumphant in the survival battle of the humans.

In the meantime, here’s an excellent overview of what’s likely to be discussed, from the Observer’s Robin McKie:

I wish we knew more about Neanderthal culture. Did they believe in god/s? What were their social gatherings like? Did they have a social hierarchy like those of Indigenous cultures we know of? What did they know about the world?

I’d be labelled racist.

Although, Homer Simpson is often portrayed as having Neanderthal characteristics, and he’s akin to being white. It’s a rich tapestry.

I doubt that skin colour has anything to do with it.

There was a link posted here the other day about Your Guide to Racism or something. I’m sure Car posted it. One of the questions was something about what if someone called Eddie McGuire an ape? The answer was vague but basically came down to if you’re offended by the remark, it’s racist no matter what your ethnic background is.

I think that to be offended shows racism.

What if you just have a stick up your butt?

then you wouldn’t be able to race far at all.

Riff-in-Thyme – did you know that that carving is an “anti-abortion monument”?

I wondered why it ended up on the Neanderthal thread.

If any modern human group has Neanderthal genes it would be those of recent European heritage.

It’s a gruesome-looking sculpture and it’s out of place in this thread.

Evidence suggests that their social groups were considerably smaller than early modern humans, and more restricted in territorial range. This may have been a major factor in their extinction.

Have you read the very popular fiction book “Clan of the cave bear” by Jean Auel? If not then do. The plot of the book is that a five-year old Cro-Magnon girl is orphaned and left homeless by an earthquake that destroys her family’s camp, she is a adopted by a family of Neanderthals, and this is their story. It gives a very detailed description of what Neanderthal culture may have been like. You can learn more from that book about the Neanderthals and their interaction with Homo sapiens sapiens than from any number of non-fiction articles. BTW, my copy is 587 pages long, which is long for a fiction book.

Reply here or in email to me if you want me to post my copy to you.

or there’s the 1986 movie… (I was 15 in 1986 and we watched it in Human Biology – I can’t imagine teachers being allowed to get away with showing something like that now)
