OK, cheese from plants is not so far-fetched, since cows eat grass, but how did they manage to conclude that fish fingers are made of chicken? You’d think the name might give a clue. BBC reports:

Almost a third of UK primary pupils think cheese is made from plants and a quarter think fish fingers come from chicken or pigs, suggests a survey.

Nearly one in 10 secondary pupils thinks tomatoes grow under ground, according to the poll for the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF).

Some 27,500 five-to-16-year-olds were questioned last month.

The charity says the figures prove the need for better teaching about cooking and healthy eating.

The survey also revealed confusion about the source of staples such as pasta and bread among younger pupils, with about a third of five-to-eight-year-olds believing that they are made from meat.

Some 19% of this age group did not realise that potatoes grew under ground, with 10% thinking they grew on bushes or trees.

Kids are cynical and suspicious? ie is a food manufacturer states it is fish, then that must mean it is something else and chicken is white meat, cheap and ubiquitous so makes sense for a manufacturer to adulterate.

Not sure why ‘the figures the need for better teaching about cooking and healthy eating’ You can cook and eat healthily regardless of where you think tomatoes or potatos grow. The difference between chicken, pork or fish in a “Meat Finger” would be marginal. And while I agree know that bread and pasta are a meat product is more important, how many five to eight year actually cook or buy their food?

Obviously they have been confused by the song:

– You say tomatoes, I say potatoes

But I agree with stealth, it seems to indicate a lack of basic science education, rather than a specific lack in the health education area.

Would be a different scenario if there was a garden at the school. I still recall the cheeky kid who knew what would happen if he dropped a couple of the tiny chillis off the bush near the door near the manse into his bag of raspberry lollies.. and when people asked, he’d allow them to stick their hand in and grab.

>>how did they manage to conclude that fish fingers are made of chicken?<<

Well, fish clearly do not have fingers. And the meat inside is white. Hence it must be chicken or pork.

Easy.

I agree. I suspect the people who did the survey did it with the specific intention of making the point they wanted to make.

Mostly the survey shows that poms are stupid…

Which is exactly why Bubblecar posted it. He likes to do a bit of pommie bashing from time to time.

Huh? For all we know, 50% of Aussie kids might think that fish fingers are made of fingers.

What a cultural-sub-groupist statement.

This, combined with in a school survey that seems to resemble a test, if kids don’t know, they would rather put something than leave it blank (they probably feel they are expected to know and feel awkward that they don’t).

Well, that’s my guess anyway.

Plus a bit worried about Bubblecar sourcing a BBC report….too good for the Daily Mail now, are we?

Fish fingers are mostly minced white fish. In the UK they are likely to be cod, haddock, pollock etc. In Australia they are often New Zealand hoki (blue grenadier).
