Legislation has passed the South Australian Parliament to recognise natural burials.

Attorney-General John Rau said it would mean consistent regulations for dealing with human remains.

“These laws reflect modern technologies, industry practices and community expectations, including the recognition of natural burial grounds,” he said.

“The use of natural burial as an alternative to more traditional forms of burial is now, for the first time, recognised under law in South Australia.”

Natural burial can involve use of a biodegradable coffin or wrapping remains in a shroud and bodies are not usually treated with any chemicals.

Plantings are often made at a burial site instead of a traditional headstone being used.

Mr Rau said other changes under the legislation would remove a 99-year limit on interment rights in public cemeteries, allowing perpetual interment rights

I’d be happy to have a tree planted on me. I’d have to get buried somewhere else though as around here they put concrete on top of the burials, then attempt to grow roses in it.

I’ll probably stick with the un-natural burial we’ve been doing for hundreds of years.

Natural burial can involve use of a biodegradable coffin

WTF is natural about a biodregradable coffin?

I doubt that is the sum total of what they mean by a natural burial. The wood part is more about touchy feely reasons for not cutting down too many trees. Marketing ploy by the sellers of the program.

I looked at that option and it was Illegal, apparently.

It won’t stop the cops from turning your grave into a crime scene in ensuing years either.

Build giant, “food blenders” locate these at dis-used oil wells and turn all the dead into slurry, pump into the old oil wells and in a couple of million years we get more oil. “Win win”

Apparently legal here if you have over 100 acres.

I haven’t looked into the particulars.

There was a requirement that the grave site be made accessible, as I recall. It was a long time ago that I looked into it.

I recall going down the Orara Way about 5 years ago and stopping for piss… west of Coffs near Coramba..

Only about 100m off the tared road there were a few shallow graves, not all that old.. wooden crosses and the dirt mounded well up.

It wasn’t a well hidden spot. I wonder why the law didn’t get involved.

How did you know they were shallow?

Hmmm, suspicious………………..shades of the Rodney episode.

Don’t really. Just looked like a cheap DIY job.

The ground was clay and gravel… just looked like a manual effort.

>Hmmm, suspicious

Ya

The site wasn’t hidden as I said. It was near the intersection of a couple of gravel roads.

Maybe they meaning any kind of burial that doesn’t involve being stuffed into a barrel and left in a warehouse.
