Subject: conjoined twins

I just watched a show about the successful separation of twins from Ireland.
They had their own hearts, a kidney each, forget what they said about the liver.
Apparently the conjoining happens in the first 7 days.
What I don’t understand is the way the embryo behaves.
It seems the genes got it together to give each boy a heart, but overall the embryo has only two legs.
What is happening here?
thanks

“What is happening here?”

What is happening here is that an embryo is splitting, but the mitosis doesn’t complete.

Stitching errors? I recently learned that doctors check new borns who have hare lips for hear problems cos it is a centreline joining problem that goes down the entire body.

They said it was two embryos that fuse.

Purple, it seems my ideas on this are out of date, so I’ll pipe down and hopefully someone with more relevant skills will be able to help.

But I’ll admit I’ve never heard of non-identical conjoined twins.

I just watched it again
during the third week, two separate non-identical embryos fuse.

I’m wondering if the announcer was confused (or just wrong)
They sure look identical to me

I’d go with wrong or confused announcer.

Ditto.

I suspect that it’d be extremely unlikely for fraternal twins to be able to fuse to make conjoined twins. OTOH, it’s not unheard of for one of a pair of fraternals to become a chimera by absorbing tissue from their sib that didn’t make it.
