seems to me that you don’t even need a desktop computer in a home anymore… just set up a wifi modem and away you go…

how would you ‘wire’ up a new family home for all things necessary in today’s world (let’s say a couple of laptops, some ipads, phones and foxtel? some sort of hidden wifi device in a closet? A port in a study? enlighten me with your modern gadgetry skills. :)

I don’t think you need to hide the machine. You want a good signal so that probably means mounting it unobstructed and reasonably high up. Maybe just tidy up the phone and power cables leading to it with some clips or cable-ties etc.

they install the NBN into laundry cupboards but that’s a bit silly, chances are towels and clothes will end up next to it and it will just get warm and given the numbers will probably start a fire one day.

you could use a wireless router (modem), its easier because you don’t have wires everywhere, when you leave you just take the router with you.

I wouldn’t bother mounting the router anywhere just keep it easy breezy and balance it somewhere, chances are you’ll end up moving it anyway. if you have the router in the centre of the house it means you can have a decent signal everywhere.

USB ports on the power points (only need the usb cable for phones etc then), power points where they are useful. x3 ethernet outlets where the TV will be that run to where the phone line is or the router/modem will be – why? Faster and more reliable (not sure if you have Xbox etc type stuff), hook that up to the router and a media server/NAS connected to the wireless router/modem, WD TV live (unless you have a smart TV) so you can watch downloaded media on the TV.

Wireless N routers will be more than strong enough to penetrate walls etc., just secure it, as IME, the neighbours also get a good signal.

All very good advice.
I’ve seen those power points with the USB outlets, a great idea.
