Subject: The Downfall of YouTube

Just in the last few days I’ve come across a number of bookmarked YouTube sites which won’t let me view videos on my iPad because the owner has not allowed the content to be displayed on mobile devices or sone such thing. One month ago I watched these vids no emblem on my mobile device. Indeed, that’s why I bookmarked them in the first place.

Talk about dropping the ball. Now sites like Vimeo are offering a much better service than YouTube, without all the crap logins or verifications or emails etc.

YouTube is self destructing.

Given that its a huge, wealthy company… How can groups like YouTube end up with employees who suggest and approve such bad decisions?

And what’s with the ads at the start of videos?

Now we’re paying to watch the ads. Sure, some can be disabled after a few seconds, but we still have to pay for the download – even just for a few seconds.

Reminds me of the beginnings of pay-tv in this country. “Go ahead”, we were told. “If you buy a subscription, you’ll get your programs ad-free.” That didn’t last long, either.

</end rant>

I don’t think that’s anything new, it’s been happening for a lot longer than a month. And it’s not Youtube anyway, it’s the content’s copyright owners that determine if it’s legal for Youtube to show it to you.

But is it Youtube or the copyright holders doing this stuff?

I think having to watch a short ad to cover the cost of providing the service is fair enough.

Just come from a very pleasant half hour re-watching/listening to:

A Sailor’s Life – Sheila Chandra
A Sailor’s Life – Fairport Convention
Who knows where the time goes – Fairport Convention
Suzanne – Leonard Cohen

Had to sit through about 20 s of advertisements in all that.

If only the ratio on commercial TV was so low.

(ps Vimeo is better in many ways, but it doesn’t have the same range of material)

(pps One of my favourite Vimeos: https://vimeo.com/13800641)

even I could handle that. After all there was a time when I spent all my weekly wages after paying my board and keep, on vinyl albums.

At the time, I had an HMV 8+8 stereo the head tracked at 8 grams.. One could virtually see the vinyl curling away as the needle passed over the grooves.

My biggest annoyance with YouTube is that I have several Google accounts. Two are for uni and one is for personal. Google things, like YouTube, have trouble understanding which account I want open at one time: It will seemingly randomly sign me in under any account and when I go to log out, it won’t give me a choice as to which account I do want to be signed in under.

Then it repeatedly asks if I want to use my real name when I comment on a video in YouTube. No, I do not. This is why I created a user name which isn’t my real name!

I use different browsers for that sort of sneaky stuff. Saves on having to swap cookies about.

I got a staff email address last week, which has now been added to Google as my default email address/login. (Uni uses Gmail). Switching accounts to the personal one isn’t a fantastic help- it automatically switches back whenever I log into uni email. Crazy system.

As for using different browsers, I normally have two open anyway. Currently Firefox has this forum, plus 8 tabs of research for an upcoming assignment. Chrome is also open for all other things. Firefox works better with the uni software (Blackboard) and Chrome (supposedly) works better for everything else (according to Mr Mutant), but I am not loving it. I love Chrome even less on the Aldi-pad.
