Do dogs for example have blood types and do they have blood banks for emergencies and operations etc.
I’ve never seen signs in vets asking for your Spot to donate his 0 negative.

Dogs have about 13 different blood groups, with between 6-8 being the major ones, and cats have 3 different types. Blood transfusion are species specific, so dogs can only give to dogs and cat only to cats.

Dogs rarely have iso-antibodies against other blood types, so in most cases, blood typing or cross-matching is not required prior to a first blood transfusion – although ideally a cross match with the recipient dog would be done.

Not a lot of places have facilities for canine/feline donations but it is done. The animal has to meet a strict set of criteria in order to donate.

Like humans there is also a universal donor type.

I know of vet practices that did lots of surgery and would keep a universal donor dog (as a pet) so they had access to blood for a transfusion if they needed it.
