Morning, it’s a new month, again.

I have a week off doing nothing at all. I wish. Well at least with a bout of insomnia it will feel like I’ve been doing nothing at all for more hours of the day, lol!

Yeps, July already…Winter started on 21st June, according to some who follow this stuff,,,so that means our summer won’t start until 21st Dec?? All those hot days from September on, is therefore just practice weather by Mother Nature???

Hello Gardeners. I got my Diggers Garden Annual in the mail this morning, which necessitated a seed inventory. I wonder why I am now going to order yet more seeds…….(I have a credit from something they couldn’t supply a few months ago, so there are a few unusual things I’ll have a go at. Purple carrots, a chilli called “Fish”, purple podded peas, tomato ananas noir.)

Was that convincing?

And now I have made probably the worst new skirt waistband in history. And I really, really stuffed up the buttonhole because I’d forgotten which order my machine does the ends and bars. Never mind, the skirt is now wearable again – my waist is not the same size it was when I made the skirt about 15 years ago! – and I wear my blouses and t-shirts out, not tucked in, so the waistband is not on show.

Evening. I haven’t been around much, wasn’t home much. There’s two fresh ducks in the freezer. My chook mate did the kill gut and dunking for me and I sat and plucked. It was the first time I ever plucked a bird and it was easy, or I thought so.
Roast duck is on the menu Thursday.
I’ve hurt my back and can barely walk..pulled a muscle. Blowed if I know how I did that, but I hardly slept and I’m on pain tabs. I can’t dress myself properly or get shoes on and just getting about slowly, bumming about in trackie dacks and big tops for comfort.

Oh I have 12 baby silkies in the brooder and I will get a pic up shortly :D

I’m very cautious with my back as I’ve had eight vertebrae fractured and they are now arthritic. If you get good advice from a physiotherapist then you’ll be aware when you are pushing your limits and which actions to take.

Opps, sorry for the blank post.

I’m still resting my back, but still busy, lol. I’m taking my trailer to a friends place so her two grown teens can load it with pavers that they are throwing away. Not rubbish! they have never been used.
I am passing them onto someone who can use them. Drive from a to b. That’s it.

In the meantime, my friends a nail technician and is going to fix my nails with clear shellac. Hopefully this will stop my nails breaking so much. They’re not long but it bluddy hurts when they break.
I’ve been cooing over the new chicks. They are so funny to watch.

We have had more DV down the back, I witnessed some destruction going on, J1 ran down the street and I think at least 3 neighbours rang the police…poor police were there two hours whilst the effects were being moved…they were not to come until tomorrow to move the stuff, J1 has spent the past 3 days moving it all outside…honestly a copper’s (well, 2 actually) got better things to do than stand and keep the peace because a dummy-spitting 30 year old man is a drama Queen…

I worry for J1 but P said to stay out of it, have made the chocolate patty cakes so might call in tomorrow and see if she wants to talk or anything…

Unnnhhhh…

No, he really had a poodle on his lap, I could see the shape of the poodle head and also some of the curls on the coat…

The chap is a bit strange, he walked past here before, sans poodle, on my footpath…maybe he’s wondering what I’ve done to earn the brand-new “Train on side road” sign? I did not want it and doubt very much if the passing traffic even looks at it…

The other granddaughter is born on a day exactly six months from her grandmother, so that’s easy too.

The grandson, well he’s one I’ll have to pin something else on to tag his birthday.

All good until today when I managed to delete a whole mailing group :(
I’m not up on MS Outlook and I clicked “delete” which deleted the whole group, instead of “remove” to remove a single entry that was no longer needed. Still got the list of names that belong in it but I will have to rebuild the group. They didn’t seem too bothered about it though. I still know more about using a computer than they do!

The couple I am working for are really nice, and I get a luxurious afternoon tea with them with crackers, salami and cheese and nutloaf. I gave them a dozen each of bantam eggs and duck eggs today.

I never touch address books or such in Outlook. You have to be careful with the Delete in Outlook I have found, sometimes I think I am deleting in a “Forward” or “Reply” email and lose the whole damn email!

Morning. I’m still hobbling about with a sore back. Back to the drs and endone prescribed for night time. But it didn’t even work on the pain, just made me sleepy. I ditched that stuff and am taking panadol osteo. Fab pain tabs! It works a treat and I can at least waddle around and make a cuppa tea without pain. Still resting. I’m supposed to be at an orchard committee meeting but there’s no way I could have negotiated 3 flights of stairs.

Mon I’m going to ring for an appt with my spinal surgeon.

Okies, that’s the hens put out, they come around the front and peck at the styrofoam box I moved up here to get away from them…will have to dump it tonight and re-pot the garlic chives into something else…

Did I say that I have whisper two brunsfelsia cuttings take? They are currently stuck in the lidless worm farm, I thought one had taken and the other day I saw another had green leaves…woot! Woot! This is the brunsfelsia that blooms only once a year, paradisical perfume…

Had the copper call in, I rang them because a ladder ended up in the chook pen last night. I was worried that the ex-tenants had come back and rummaged through J2’s tool shed, but the sergeant said no tools had been left in the shed…it’s obvious somebody has been back since serge inspected on Thursday … there is a dripping tap, they stole the fitting (how petty) but Serge said not to go in there at all (I offered to put another connector on so the tap drips onto the fruit trees or something)…

What a never-ending saga…

Hello Gardeners. We only went for a small walk this morning. Then to the cafe for breakfast (chicken and leek vol-au-vent with salad…..there is very little lunch, and then tea at the pub tonight). Since then I’ve pruned 4 roses, the triple graft apple and the peach and nectarine. And rewound the boysenberry vines along their wooden horizontal bars.

I’m thinking of lying down and reading and napping for a couple of hours now. It’s sunny outside, but I don’t feel very inspired.

Mon I’m going to ring for an appt with my spinal surgeon.

hope it is only a minor setback. perhaps you have been overdoing it?

I hope so too. An xray and revisit says it’s muscular, but the pain is way too much for it to be that. When the painkiller wears off, I literally cannot move.

I gave them a dozen each of bantam eggs and duck eggs today.

straight after the delete does Ctrl-Z (undo) work in that instance?

1.5 hours whippersnippering is enough, the engine is running ruff, anyway…I will send it down with Sonny Jim to the repair man: it may need an overhaul, and I think there’s a lot of dust around the head…

looked there too. It really isn’t very intuitive. It came up with a message asking if I was sure I wanted to delete the item, but the item it was talking about was not the same item I thought it was talking about. If it said do I want to delete the distribution group, then I would have known I was doing the wrong thing!

Know better now. All is not lost as I have a list of the names that belong in the group so I can recreate it but it will take time as there were a lot of names.

Hello Gardeners. I didn’t do any gardening today. I took Long to Warrnambool for Grade 1 obedience training. We need to do a lot more practising at home. And this afternoon seems to have disappeared into going for coffee, hanging washing on the line, making the bed, talking to my Mum on the phone. Don’t know where the time went really!

>>How many grades does he have to do?<<

I’ll only take him through Grade 1. I’m not interested in going on to trialling. Years ago I went down that track (a short distance) and decided dogs are not my entire life. I used to be the teacher in the puppy class (for 10 years) so I sort of know how to do the training. But I take him into the public classes for socialization purposes. He needs to be a friendly, sociable dog, with people and dogs. We live in a small town, so going to the classes is a good idea.

I think I told you that I am concerned about my 83 year old mother and her memory. I phoned her this afternoon to see how she went with the geriatrician yesterday……and she put Dad on the phone to tell me because she couldn’t remember all the details. But according to both of them, everything is fine, nothing wrong with her. The most worrying part of it is that once upon a time my mother would not be able to hand over to Dad, because the story was hers. Always. In the minutest detail. I have asked Mum to ask her GP if I can see a copy of the geriatrician’s report.

So now Mr buffy and I will sit back and stop trying to help. I suspect there will be pieces to pick up at some point. My parents will be visiting my brother in Tassie in about 10 days, so I’ve emailed him and asked him to be observant.

Morning green ones :)
I’m still resting, no choice about that anyway, but I’ve been productive at least catching up on phone calls emails and reading.

I was supposed to be going to my sisters in brissy this month, but there’s no chance of that happening, I’m just not able to go, but there’s a more pressing reason. An elderly Aunt passed away suddenly leaving a younger aunt who is disabled and needs full time care with no where to live. They have lived together all their lives with the older aunt giving her life to caring for the younger aunt. My sis donna and her husband has taken her in and is looking after her and seeking suitable accommodation for her. This may take a while. But we’ve no time limit. Time changes things, people and circumstances change. What will be will be.

Yesty I was feeling a bit like the chooks, cooped up, so went with my orchard mate to our monthly ‘bountiful backyards’ meet up in a members garden in ascot vale. This little private group of about 12 people was formed when one emailed another to ask about a problem situation in her garden, the question in turn was sent to me to pass onto to others that I knew may be able help and make suggestions. All this second and third hand info was ok, but as my mate said, there’s nothing like going to see the problem first hand, so out little group was born. It was a terrific idea, and in every garden there’s something to learn for everyone.

This garden was a sight to behold..I was gobsmacked at the size of the block and the many many productive areas and fabulous old fruit trees. The problem in this garden was that it was narrow and ran east west and there is this massive tall melaleuca tree on the western fence that in summer, overshadowed everything else from 2 pm onwards. They hated it. It necessitated building rolling vege raised beds to be pulled into the sunlit areas, and that was a problem too, it’s hard work. The neighbours wished the huge tree gone as well. But the lady didn’t want to bring down the tree then create the problem of everything suddenly opened to the hot summer sun, so what to do. We pondered over cups of tea and crackers with tamarillo chutney and came up with a solution. While the group strolled the garden, I sat on a seat feeding chickweed to a the ladys chickens.

Defoliate the tree, lessen it’s height to half and ringbark it. Obviously need an arbourist to do this. Remove the smaller branches leaving a framework of wood, then grow food vines on it. The lady was stunned at the suggestion at first, but then her eyes lit up. She was very enthused about what she could grow on it, kiwi fruits, chocko vine and the like.

Next month is a smaller newer garden that has no trees, shade is sorely needed but the owner fellow is worried about future tree problems and wants to know what is right for his family and the house to plant. He want’s edibles and native bird attracting shrubs.

It certainly was, and I hate doing nothing. There’s always something that one can do.

Right now on top of my to do list is ring my surgeons rooms and make an appt. I won’t be happy until I hear him say everything is ok with my metalwork and op site. Even if it means another MRI.
Thank goodness for panadol osteo, it is the only thing that takes the pain away. It craps all over endone, for me. Carefully goes it though, 8 hours between tablets.

The Annual Buddleia Massacre is on here. Most of them done. And a nice collection of straight sticks for bean supports next Summer. I just have to remember to put them in head down so they don’t grow roots. Although I think they will be rather dessicated by the time I get around to using them.

I’m nurseryman nd I’ve spent my life trying to convince not just customers but also the nurseries.. to stop look and listen to the fact that 200 natives are removed to allow one ornamental or fruit bearing, water hungry weed. To make it grow healthily another 200 to 200,000 natives have to die due to the water that needs to be applied.

Don’t get me started…they bulldoze the native scrubs and replace them with “natives” that are not local…requiring water to get established and to keep alive…or worse, freaking palms…

I ask my GP who would he see, if the problem were his. Then, Mr Han doesn’t hand you the scan request sheet, his sec’ faxes it there and then to the imaging place with a request that they ring you for the scan appt.

I got out the building and slowly walking back to my car and the ph was ringing, it was the imaging co.

Hello! I’m home. Grandchildren all bonded and grandma is buggered. If I had to sit for a test on child raising I would fail misurably. I can’t believe that the way we raised our kids was so wrong compared to how they do it nowadays.

I know I was away longer than i said I would be. Sorry about that.

The gardens here have missed me badly. Maybe I should say that the weeds were glad I was gone. They have had a party and are close to taking over. Lots to catch up on now. Fruit and citrus trees to be pruned, fertilised etc. D has made shade cloth covers for the vegie gardens. The fight with the cabbage butterfly was getting our of hand and we don’t have shares in the Dipel company. These igloos will be transferable to cover plants as they are needed so the cost will be worth it in the long run.

I’m looking foreward to chatting with you soon people.

Welcome back. You were missed :)

I am so tired, mainly from not sleeping, because I never do when I have to wake up to an early alarm. I hear about that quite a bit from others too. What is it with that?
But, I have to take the pain tablets on time, so I had a play with the chicks and checked on the incubator, made a cuppa and gave Max his 2nd pain tablet for today.

Max.. my mad four footed fluffy, went overboard with joy when he saw me return from being out less than an hour.. he skidded across the floor and body slammed a wall. He came up limping and headed for his bed, foreleg up and crying. Silly dog! I checked him all over and nothing is broken. Still, he won’t put it to the floor. I’ll see how he goes. I’m starting to suspect that at age nine, he may have some arthritis.

It’s raining again. I’m kinda happy about it because it puts things like winter bush fires on the back burner. We’ve had very few cold days this winter. Even the stone fruit trees havent completely lost all their leaves.

Had to go to town today and I got caught in a couple of showers. You just know that we have at least 5 umbrellas lying around this place but none with me. Happen to see a large ‘special’ bin of umbrellas for sale, outside one of those cheap discount shops so I bought an umbrella for $1.99. I even got the checkout guy to cut off the tag off so I could use it immediately. I stepped outside the shop and the rain stopped. Like someone turned off a tap. Hasn’t rained since either but it will. You can bet on it. We now have at least 6 umbrellas. One hasn’t even been taken out of its cover yet. When it rains tomorrow I’m going to open it up and go for a paddle. Got to make sure it works. lol.

I used to buy the loveliest umbrellas but continually donated them to the Lost Property of Queensland Rail…shame as they were lined with pretty material whilst looking plain on the outside…

We bought a black Sapote tree today. I happened to see somebody mixing the flesh of the Sapote in a bowl of vanilla ice cream and it looked delish. This fruit apparently tastes like chocolate and I was salivating at the thought of eating it with ice cream.

It fruits abundantly and there are no known pests or diseases that attack it. I carries a huge crop and they hang on the tree unripe until they are picked. I can see me getting sick of chocolate pudding fruit, I hope.

Evening. Apart from seeing big scary looking birds, I’ve been tending cute little ones. 10 little silkie chicks went under two broody mums. All went well :)

I’ve had a almost constant steam of visitors taking up my internet time. The nerve, lol.

Still resting, really not much else I can do, but still going stir crazy at having to. My elderly orchard mate brought over two large carry bags of home grown poormans oranges. ‘There, sit and chop these for marmalade. That’ll give you something to do. And this year, don’t bloody forget to enter two jars into the bunniong marmalade marmal ashes comp!’

Morning. My sleepover visitors have left. It’s a lovely sunny day, have to go out soon with the man and do some grocery shopping. I have to accompany him or goodness knows what he will fill the trolley with. Knowing him chips and chocolate.

I will water the garlic, and I attempted to prune the passionfruit, just followed the leaders and snipped off laterals that I could without reaching or bending.. but then got told off for doing it too early. Ok I’ll just go back to sitting lol.

I have obviously missed your latest trauma HP. Sorry to hear you are in pain again and I hope it’s not too serious.

Passionfruit pruning has me miffed too. I kinda cut out everything that’s dead and everything that looks old and bare. It’s hard to know just what to prune off.

Been making my giant Anzac Biscuits this morning. They went off the boil there for a while but the cafe that orders them has re started stocking them. I don’t know whether I’m glad or not. It’s good for me to have to do something specific like an order but I loved not having to do them at all too. It’s like riding a bike after you’ve fallen….time to get back on again.

Hello Gardeners. We have rain, so I have done Not Very Much this morning. Admittedly we didn’t get out of bed until after 8.00am, which is very unusual for me. Mr buffy had an ambulance callout at midnight, and got back around 2.00am. Unusually for me, I didn’t drop off while he was out, so I read. Then it took a while to drop off once he was back and wanted to talk a little bit (it was a happy callout, not required, by an elderly lady who felt ill but recovered quickly). I have sorted out the chooks and put them back into their long run. They’ve been out on the grass in the tractor for about 3 weeks or so, and Mr buffy sprayed the fumitory (they won’t scratch it out or eat it) a couple of weeks ago. So the run is very ungreen, but they seem to like scratching about in the red gravel. Must be quite a few critters there, I think. And the dampness will bring them up.

We just had 3 black cockatoos fly over. Screeching their heads off they were. They seem big when they are in flight just above your head. Hope they were headed for our trees that have borers in them. They can demolish a sapling in no time and the tree usually recovers and is better than ever.

Now that the vegie gardens have igloo covers over them things are growing at a fine rate. We are going to be giving silverbeet away to anyone who will take it. Caulies are starting to flower. Cabbages are looking healthy and green. Dwarf and butter beans are flowering so beans shouldn’t be long now. Not much success with the sugar peas though. We seem to have problems with them and beetroot. Not sure why.

black sapote failed here but they will grow and especially for you and your icecream.

I had bird netting over a beaut crop of barley Green manure – six inches high and growing fast – then a bunny came along and sat on the netting while munching the crop through the holes – clever.

Just as mad today with visitors. I lined up some work for them, bathrooms and laundry and they did it very well. I almost felt guilty. Youngest daughter had her list and went through it. And she forgot to take some handwashing out of the trough when JJ’s girlfriend was using the washing machine at the same time. Result, one very flooded house. Panic stations with all the towels being grabbed out of the linen press and any dirty towels and sheets. They mopped and mopped. The floor looks so clean I can see my face in it :D

I had hubby and JJ working too. I scored a queen size bed with mattress on freecycle for GS, sent them to pick it up with the trailer. I love the solid wooden headboard and footboard, very strong bed. They also brought home a glass topped round table with a wrought iron base from the same place. It’s gorgeous!

My work is done ;)

Good morning Gardeners. We’ve had around 16mm rain in the past 24 hours. Rather damp outside. I don’t think there will be much done in the way of gardening around here today. Probably go back to making the blouse I started on yesterday. A few weeks ago I bought a 1950/60s pattern from the local old wares shop. It is supposed to be a size 16, with seam allowance within the pattern, and it is Simplicity, so the sizing is possibly a little generous, but I’ve cut it out from an old sheet with a seam allowance cut extra. Then if I like the fit and the style once it’s made, I’ll make it up in a better fabric to wear to work. The one made out of sheet material can be useful wearing around here, although it would probably be tidy enough for work anyway as I used the ‘good’ bits of the sheet fabric, not the holey bits!

I’m supposed to be going to dog training in Warrnambool this morning, but I’ve decided not to drive the 70km there to find it is too wet for the class. The roads will be all skittery with water in the potholes anyway.

It’s showery here too. 6mls o/n. Sun is out at the moment but showers are passing all the time. D just dug up a big clump of Agapanthus and the ground was very dry around them. In other parts of the yard it’s soggy.

I’ve just finished taking up the hem on a pair of trackies for D. They have been in the sewing cupboard for 3 years waiting for me to hand sew them. They are made of a fine polar fleece and I didn’t fancy using the machine to do the job. Anyway, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Amazing how I feel a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Why don’t we just get straight in and do these jobs because the guilt I’ve carried for 3 years is very heavy.

Busy busy here and I’ll be out driving with the trailer today from Hoppers to Grovedale in Geelong picking up unwanted bedheads with footboards for seating projects. JJ is going to make them and going to get GS involved, if he can.
I sent out requests online for any going out to hard rubbish and got inundated. So far picking up two queen size bedheads with footboards, two singles, a cot, a double and lots of slats that can be used for the seat parts. I’m going to get a beaut long bench seat made for the fernery :D

As a trade off I will take any of their unwanted mattresses only fit for the tip and add them to a pile of hard rubbish we are building.

I forgot to have brekky. Better eat first, hey.

I’m not sure what a rolled collar is…..but it was somewhat fiddly to sew the top collar piece onto the shirt and undercollar. I’ve done them before (years and years ago, on a couple of blazers). I had to stop and really think about it. It has worked OK. I haven’t got any more done today because Mr buffy put on a movie called RED and somehow I got stuck watching it. Now I’m not motivated to do the slits on the sleeves and the French cuffs today. They can wait.

Finally back after a slight delay, a forgotten roll of allan keys that I had to go back on the way home for, a road that wasn’t completed that the gps sent me into, and nothing but a big mud hole at the end necessitating a bit of fancy driving to get out of and the car slid a beauty. That was the best wheelie I ever did. JJ screamed, the big girl lol. Mud all over the car. Trailer fine :)

Got home and walked through the side gate and Max jumped all over me. Tried to side step his muddy paws and careened sideways into a pile of bicycles JJ was fixing. The man and JJ picked me up and I checked all my limbs work and didn’t hurt my back, yep all good. Apart from a skun knee and graze on my wrist.

Hot cuppa now and I’m sitting still until bedtime.

Aww :)

It so happens I’ve been called out again to candle some eggs. Not far away, couple streets. They’ve been in my mad chook mates incubator seven days and he reckons they are infertile and he is panicking a bit because he paid quite a bit for them. I’ll have a look for him.

JJ flooded the house again, the second time that’s happened in two days. He didn’t realise the first trough is the one with the washing machine outlet in it. Hmm. Oh well, the floors pristine now lol.

Haha. I wondered if I ought to stay in bed today. The polished concrete floors can take being flooded but things that were in the bottom of the pantry line the bench waiting to be put back.

Mrs rb floods the house regularly.
a) she leaves taps running and walks away forgetting to wait. She hates waiting.

b) the builders made the concrete slab run all water to the middle of the house.

my laundry is a step lower than the rest of the house so not a problem for me. and it is only me so I can control the situation anyway.

HP, maybe you should get one of those laundry tubs that have a separate drain for the laundry outlet hose?

We have one but the water from the machine comes out with such force as to bubble back up and over the side onto the floor. It was easier to hook the hose outlet over the centre tap for the two troughs. Maybe if the hose was pushed further into the drain hole it may work.
Big machine, pain in the bum.

Just scored a small unwanted hills hoist that folds upwards for $25. New and still in the packaging and with the seat piping that gets cemented in. Yay. It’ll go in the middle of the lawn area.

I’ve told JJ to stop telling me about the amount of good quality but unwanted furniture that gets crushed that he sees put out for hard rubbish collecting.. he told me of a red leather couch near new, 11 grand to buy when he looked it up, and other things, cabinets that a craftsman would have worked hard on. Beautiful bedheads. It’s sickening.
They are allowed to put things aside and tell the crusher truck following a couple hours later not to pick it up, but then finding someone who can go and get it right there and then is hard.

I’m in the throes of organising people who need such items to follow his truck (for smaller items) with their car and my trailer. JJ will text me with a photo and where the item is and I make calls. Some things have been saved.

Busy busy here and I’ll be out driving with the trailer today from Hoppers to Grovedale in Geelong picking up unwanted bedheads with footboards for seating projects.

Now that’s a good idea…

Bored, sick of resting. Checked chooks and chicks and get up and walk about every so often. I did go for a drive to check out my friends fruit tree prune/ garden permascape redesign, and pick up some stronger medication for the sick rooster. Poor Joker is hanging in there, but eating and drinking well. My mad chook mate came over to check him and lend me a waterer to attach to the door of his cage so he won’t knock the medicated water over.

Thankfully, no. I have been diagnosed with having had viral meningitis, the time I spent a week sitting in a chair in a dark room unable to lie down or open the curtains.
But the one that you are thinking of was this one.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycobacterium_avium_complex

In my case the immune system had allowed it in at one stage then beaten it into submission and had locked it down but it could have started up again any time my immune system went down again. they found it because I fell off a ladder and broke vertebrae and stuff.

I reckon that going on the symptoms they described, that I’d had it since about 1974.

Been to my surgeons appt, I have a prolapsed disc at L3/4 :( But.. my previous surgical site looks good and strong, so that’s one thing. The disc is the one above and is point of bursting so I have to take it easy, read, do nothing. I can’t anyway. I have to have a day procedure on the 26th, ct guided lumbar epidural injection with steroids.

I’ve a big latte and a cup of tea in front of me and can’t decide which one to drink first. lol.

I’m hooked up to a halter monitor atm, making sure I have a heart beat. I don’t expect much to come of it, I went through this procedure about 3 years ago and nothing came of it. It is just that a little while ago when I had a cold my heart started skipping some beats so I thought I better let my doctor know so it is on the record. No pain or anything, just a flutter and a skipped pulse beat. The first time this happened 3 years ago (just before I moved here) I was under a lot of stress and run down. This time it was when I was sick with a cold, so run down again. I am fine now so nothing untoward is happening so the test probably won’t show anything.

My mum has been on meds for a heart murmur for I know remember how long and I suspect it is something like that. Not actually a heart problem but a nervous system problem where the signal from the brain gets waylaid. I did have a diagnoses of a heart murmur just after J was born thirty years ago but no medication was required then or since and the symptoms for that was palpitations.

Some blood was taken for thyroid and other stuff and the results came back normal.

Yeah, the sewing pile is growing :) The material stash is however bigger than I can move at the moment, lot’s of bending and lifting bolts and fat bags of heavy materials, so catching up on mending will happen :)

I’ve a big latte and a cup of tea in front of me and can’t decide which one to drink first. lol.

You gotta get that one fixed in a hurry.

Could be Tachycardia which is one of my problems.

Nope, it means that one can win the SOO 8 years in a row without damaging the opposition’s bodies, health or careers…

It means if you stick to game smarts, you can win, again and again…

Went to the local RSL with Sonny Joe last night to watch the game … the old town has quietened down a lot, in the old days they’d have been driving around town, barping on their musical car horns…good times, good times…along with the celebratory bonfires at gravel pits and much rum and Coco Cola …

It long ago decided me that competition was simply all, gung ho.

Nothing to do with being yourself as a solo performer.

Absolutely…NSW has struggled for years with all the “star” performers thrown together and expected to play as a team…now they realise being a “star” is not enough: you’ve got to play well with everyone else…

People say “sentimental value” but sentiment is part of lore that’s handed down…

Internet problems here. I usually connect through a wireless router but it is not linking up to the modem. I ran “Troubleshoot” which is probably the same thing. I also rang my service provider and they took me through a whole lot of stuff too. He seemed to think the problem is in the modem and gave me a number to ring, which I haven’t done yet as I couldn’t be bothered last night.

Morning. It’s vege swap day again.
I haven’t a hope of picking citrus to take along, but had a fellow bring me bags of lemons and limes, so they’re in my car boot waiting to go already.
My friends will get them out the car for me.

JJ, yesty: ‘Mum whens a chocolate cake gunna appear again?’

Me: when you make it. I’ll tell you and you do the work. (I could have stood at the bench and made it, getting him to gather things, but I saw an opportunity)

‘Ok!’

So I proceeded to tell him where to get the recipe sheet and all the ingredients, measure each, with spoon cup and scales out, and he did all that.
Then lining the tin, x 3 separate linings. That took some explaining. So did explaining how to work the kitchenaid mixer and getting the beater attached.
Melted the wet ingredients tog’ and sift the dry into a bowl. Mix the two into a batter and pour. Cake went in the oven for one hour and tested with a carving fork. Not quite set, another ten mins. Perfick.
Then the ganache. The cake sat wrapped outside on the patio table to cool.

He. ‘Woohoo now I know how to make it!’.
Yep :D

So, I thought, I’ll just wander around the garden and see what needs doing, perhaps do some cuttings of the Victorian Christmas Bush and the feijoa. What did I do? Cleaned out the chooks nesting shreds, fed them the seed leftovers from the cockatiel feeder, cut the cockatiels a new eucalyptus branch……and ended up digging and moving rocks in the chook run. Did I do the cuttings? No. Did I do the garden wander? No. But I moved a stack of rocks about 10m from where they were, a couple of handfuls at a time:

 photo ChookRunRocks20July13_zps56e45a59.jpg

I love the rocks you dig up here on the side of an old volcano. Mostly it’s bits of granite/bluestone, some of it flaked, and odd lumpy rocks and conglomerates. But every now and then you pick up something that is a mass of red scoria stuck together, and occasionally you pick something up that is so light you examine it and find it is full of holes!

Just did the feijoa and Victorian Christmas bush cuttings. I usually whack them into a pot of garden soil, but I’ve just stuck them in the ground between the citrus this time. It will be interesting to see what happens. The soil there is rather gritty (scoria) and has been worked as a veggie area for some years, so they should like it. I also pruned my beautifully perfumed yellow rose, so I put in some cuttings from that too.

I’ve been outside listening in on the frogs conversation. One said to the other, “Can I come over to your place?” the other answered “no because her husband would be home soon.” So he said“How about you duck over here to me then?” She obviously refused because he got all croaky about it. Amazing how I know exactly which frog was the male. LOL.

I’d like to announce that either muscles at the age of 54 complain more than 35 year old ones, or my memory is failing too……

:)

Now I should go and do that reading for work. Really I should.

I have been reading a supplement to Survey of Ophthalmology which is a history of the recent developments in cataract surgery and intra-ocular lenses. It’s fascinating. The more so because it is my history. Of my time. I started practising in 1981, just as all the intra-ocular lens stuff was getting under way. I am old enough to have seen pre IOL surgery and then all the developments to the wonderful thing it is today.

I think I have been very lucky in my timing of my life and career.

Spent my day digging and shifting dirt and old builders rubble.. Yes that means that lime and cement and gravel made it like digging rock. All this is under a jewellery shop where there is no room to stand up. Shifted four cubic metres into a wheelbarrow out across boards over a drop, around two tight opposite right angles(through doorways) and into the trailer. This also meant that I had to drive four trailer loads away and shovel each trailer out before it could be filled again. Yes I did have the help of one other to dig but it was me who filled and emptied each trailer.

Been baking. Lots of spinach to use up so I’ve done spinach and ricotta cannelloni, twice. There was enough filling to make a pie too so I did. I added some semi dried tomatoes to the mix. Tastes good. Have also done some custard slices. Just waiting for the custard to cool.

We head off tomorrow and will be in Bris for a few days and then a quick trip to Adelaide and back by next Wednesday.

I’m really over this jet setting lifestyle. Specially when freezing weather is predicted for the south. Brrr.

I can recall an incident from my childhood which occurred between myself and a couple of the kids from the house next door. We were very young like five or six. I saw a mole cricket by using my fingers to find it and bring it to the surface. I showed them how to find it but they were unable to poke their fingers into the dark unknown. The prospect horrified them.

some kids are just like that though. My niece was brought up on a small farm where her mum, my sister, was always out doing stuff in the dirt. But my niece just hated getting her hands dirty and wanted to wear pink dresses, much to my sister’s dismay!

In the case I mentioned the difference was clear, There were 11 kids in the family next door and there was no garden. Their dirt was rock hard and the children were not encouraged to learn.

One of them, city born and bred, refused to stop for his wife to pick up bags of free horse manure on the side of the road during a car trip to outter roads here yesty. The car would smell he said, too dirty, and yuk.
Boy has he copped it from her, and all us, her gardening buddies. He’ll get a car clean from one, lend of a trailer (me) to pick up said poop, and told not to be so wasteful. Able persons despatched to pick up. The bags and extras will be picked up at 9.40 this morning.

Just as well the garden grows by itself. Garlic is looking good, as are the fruit trees. A friend came over yesty to dig up the yacons for me and as I suspected from first year plants, hardly any edible tubers, but lots of replanting tubers and the clump has many sprouting pieces. I will keep five good bits for replanting and will harvest 2 next year, leaving the remaining for the following year. Then I will replant some of them and tie the year tag on so I can harvest second year ones annually.
He also raked out chook poop from their pen and threw in a large bag of mulch. The chooks spread it well. It smells nicer now and not so slippery for me to feed them and collect eggs. 6 big googs this morn :)

Not necessarily, you could still cut it down or just cut away any dead or dying stalks, and ferret for the underground tubers :)

Actually I did drive back. Although it was sunny it was still very cold. I had so many layers on for the bike I could hardly move and my hands were cold and stiff by the time I got home. By the time I got to Yea again it would have been even colder to ride home and quite frankly, I am out of condition!!!

Good morning Gardeners. About 5 degrees here. I’ve been for three walks, successively longer ones. Took the old dog first, very short. Then middle aged dog, medium walk. Then puppy, longish but not long walk. Took about an hour in total. Now cooking pork chippolatas and egg for breakfast. I’ll hang out some washing that has been doing it’s thing in the machine and then go for a coffee.

I thought it was a good swap. They take the paper shreds quite often, it’s an informal swapping arrangement. I just let them know, leave the bags on the verandah and they pick them up. These friends do native bird rehab, as well as growing their own veggies and stuff.

Morning green ones.

My back pain is nearly 100% better by leaps and bounds and I’m off all pain medication. I’m feeling great :D
That epidural cortisone jab, though a white knuckled ride at the time, was the perfect treatment. It amazes me that this terrific neurosurgeon is always right. Some aren’t always, some guess at what can be tried and want you do or try different things, but this one at the time I presented, in sheer agony, I could hardly move, said do this it’s what you need now and asap. And he was right. Good bloke.

Next it’s off to physio x 3 times a week and get this back of mine strong again. Yay! I’m still being very careful as cortisone initially weakens the joint leaving it vulnerable to further injury for several days.

In the meantime back at the urban farm, the chooks are great and laying heaps. I sent the man off to the poultry supplier with a list and on it was golden yolk layer pellets. Well he didn’t see the bags of it and brought home a different one. That being showbird breeder pellets. He said well it’s got a picture of a chook on the bag at least! lol!

And didn’t the feathered lot devour it with gusto! I couldn’t believe it, not a single bit left. Even the young poults scrambled to it, leapfrogging the huge breeds to get to it. I laughed as they are lower in the status and usually have to wait until it’s their turn. I normally feed the youngins separately in their own pen, but because I was out of action, the man and big kids were opening all their gates too early and letting them all out to roam.
I didn’t mind that, but it meant that those big hens queuing for the nest box got impatient and decided the silkies quarters were better and seeing it available, stuffed their large bodies through the smaller door to the silkies nest box to lay. That was quite an effort and hilarious to witness. It was comparable to say, seeing a staffy dog try to fit through a kitten door! lol! I looked up the info from the lauke site and yes, it’s quite good to feed to all my feathered friends. More expensive to buy, but if they eating it well and not spreading it all over the pen for feral birds, then it saves me money. Yay :)

Right, kettles boiled, off to make a cuppa.

Good morning Gardeners. Dog training in Warrnambool this morning. Although there are rain bands coming through, so I’m not quite decided whether to go or not.

I can wait another 20 minutes to half an hour to decide yet.

Morning. I hope you’re all still asleep.
I’ve been up since 4 am to drive JJ to his work, with the very handy trailer, to pick up an old very ornate wrought iron bedhead. This one’s going on my bed :) It was going to be crushed, so I was only too happy to get up to bring it back. There was also two heavy French doors that I will bring back when I pick him up this afternoon, with the very handy trailer. JJ’s put them aside with his name on so they don’t get crushed.
They are for a wood mad orchard friend looking for some. JJ showed him a photo of them and the fellow got excited and thinks they may be red pine. Obviously that must be a good thing.
I’m saddened at the amount of good things that end up in the tip in splinters.

In the meantime, I put some jars of sweetened condensed milk in the crockpot and switched it on late before I went to bed to make ‘dulce de leche’ caramel as a filling for tarts. 5 hours, perfect timing.

My back is feeling great, no pain at all :)

I’ve been awake since 3 AM

Glad your back is feeling good.

I’m potting up some tomatoes since we should have just creeped past the worst of the coldest nights. There is a bit of light precipitation about but I doubt it will get to 1 mm.

It seems you never sleep RB.
I’m going back for a little lie down after feeding the chooks.

Say, why can’t I seem to find any reference to lime verbena plants? Only lemon verbena comes up in searches. I know it exists, I have seen it and smelt it. I’ve gardeners asking for it but can’t seem to find out anything about it. Weird.

Oh be still my beating heart! I just picked up 9 passionfruit from under the vine. OK, they aren’t big ones. But the vine has been there 8 or 9 years and I think we might have had half a dozen fruit in all that time. Nice and bushy, etc, not very productive. I hope this doesn’t mean it is going to do one or may be two seasons and then cark it.

:)

Have a lie-down and read a good ophthalmology mag…that’ll calm you down…

Maybe the soil’s finally right for passionfruit production?

Morning all.
I’m off shortly to a girl friends place to watch a garden design transformation that’s been taking place over the past few weeks. This small plain garden had some problem areas going to waste and the problems only grew. Several fruit trees have been there years but never produced a single fruit. So when my friend asked who do I get in to fix it, I suggested a close friend gardener fellow of many years of experience and was happy to do some work there and teach her how to look after it and all things gardening and fruit.
My girl friend is very happy and excited about it.
I’m taking my very handy little trailer as it’s going to be loaded with well composted horse manure for my garden. My girl friend got a high sided cage trailer full to the brim of it from her mothers horse stud. The manure was put to the side and turned regularly and no new poop added. It’s perfect.

The old men of the forum have read the words of Rebsie Fairholm’s ‘Broad bean: Red flowering’ and decided they are worth a try.

You are the only one here to have tried them I think?

Old women too ;) before I go about growing anything new I will ask a lot of people about it, the differences in varieties, taste, flowers and best climate conditions for my area, among others. Otherwise I’m just wasting my time and money even trying.

Woohoo! I gardened again, lol. JJ piled some bags of horse manure onto the vege beds and I walked over it to flatten it. He dug it in for me then and I direct sowed the 12 broadbeans and put 3 lt plastic bottle cloches over them.

And I scored a bargain!
I’m finally rehoming my big goldfish to a fellow in macedon who is so excited to be getting them, that he is building a big ornamental pond for them in his front garden. He, of the mega dollars and land/house size, has a hobby farm with sheep and showcase chickens. In return I’ll get two sheep ready for the table, in freezer packs. The lambs will be ready in a couple weeks and he will give me some large buckets to transport the fish individually. Don’t wanna stress them by piling them in. ‘Uncle Charles’ as he told me to call him, is a very nice fellow and will look after the fishies well :D

And I can start physiotherapy for my back as soon as the physio gets my clinical notes faxed from the surgeon. Yay :)

I don’t want blackbirds digging them out and there’s the odd young leghorn chicken hopping over the fence too. I had the cut bottles from last time I used them over seedlings, they are terrific. I just store them in a bin bag hanging in the shed between uses.

I’ve 90 ×3 litre pet bottles stored in bin bags that get reused for worm wee and manure teas. Courtesy of the vege swap members collecting them for me :)

Eventful night here. We finally got a really good solid queen size bed to Giant Sons apartment. It was a freecycle freebie and was sitting in the carport for 2 months waiting for a good time to get it there, and get his old broken one back here. We have a hard rubbish pick up planned for this fri coming, so had to align all the people that could help and just do it.
The very handy little trailer has paid for itself for sure now.
I also raided my linen press for some good sheets, pillowcases and doona covers to make it all up fresh for them. GS and girlfriend were over the moon with it :) The really horrible bed and base they had was loaded on and we got home not long ago. I drove and sat in the car as the beds were swapped over, as parking in the city, even at night, will attract the parking bloke with his electronic doodad ready and poised to fine you. Even when you’re on a mission from God.
The bags of home made food packages and fresh ‘mums eggs’ and assorted other things were met with a huge grin too.

Speaking of GS, he is definitely on the right medication mix now. All smiles and hardly any agro moods anymore, everything is going smoothly.

the precautions are worthwhile imho. I paid $5 for 12 seeds – so I hope they multiply and I have plenty to eat plus 40 seeds to plant next year.

I don’t keep seed. Every couple of years I buy a packet from Diggers. Because I am interplanting them for colour only, I don’t bother with seed collecting. I presume they would contaminate each other though. Maybe you would get pink! Or blotchy!

Morning. It’s sunny out. Though I hear we’re in for some rain over the next week.
I’ve sniffed out a pile of lucerne hay loose on the ground about 15 mins drive out. It’s the leftovers of a massive stack. The bottommost bales had broken and left to spoil. Myself and five others, with four trailers between us, are going to pick it all up and bag it for our gardens and vege beds. Waste not. My job is to wind the bits of baling twine for reuse.
We’ll sweep the paddock clean ;)

I shifted Lin Lin to her fave broody spot in the fernery and set 8 eggs under her. I put her in a little cat carrier on fresh hay and put the eggs one by one in front of her. She pulled them under her with her beak and fluffed herself up and tucked her head in for the long sit. She’s a legend.

My stars, the lucerne pile was massive! If we went back three times with all four trailers we would still have to leave some! Roughly half a ton on each trailer and tarped and tied, we only made a small dent in the pile. It’s perfect. Timing was great too, we’d just finished and put the bags of ropes away and it started raining. Fruit trees and vege beds, here it comes! :) I’ll up load a pic later.

Putting the eggs in front of Lin Lin was just something I wanted to try. I was testing her mothering skills and experience, and her level of trust with me. If I did that with a first timer broody, they might object to the eggs having been handled or see them as ‘not theirs’ and push them out of the nest.

But that’s it for breeding, I will have enough Silkies, once some chicks grow and sexes sorted, to keep me in beaut bantam eggs for years. My Anakie farm friend is coming to take Joker, the Silkie roo who can’t crow well, back home to the farm during the week. I will miss him. So will the hens.

My chicken meat fellow arrived with the boxes of chicken too. Yum, can’t wait to try it. Five boxes each containing five birds, I got two boxes and 8 birds went straight into the freezer. 2 are about to be cut into pieces and made into yummy paprika chicken. I will be busy for the rest of the arvo making it.

One box was picked up already and the remaining two will be picked up later this evening. Our buying club will order them once a month. Included for each box was a handy little welcome info pack, business cards and a few fresh herbs, rosemary thyme and oregano.

The man took our 2 info packs to his work and already texted me back with more orders from his co workers!

I bought an obviously home-grown whole chicken from the butcher last week, but had to freeze it as there’s nobody to share it with, P is travelling away a lot…however I am looking forward to it as the shop chicken is deodorised, plus I think this chicken might have had a better life than the shop chickens…

I’ve never seen a chicken with yellow fat. Well there ya go. Pasture raised on plenty of greens, according to those who kill their own. The cooking pot smells delicious. Only me at home tonight, so I’ll fridge it and have it tomorrow night. I like to do that anyway as the flavour is better the following day.

Argh! Orchards AGM on and I need to go, but climbing three flights of stairs is out.

I’ve suggested a conference call so I hope they set that up. They have 10 minutes.

Good morning Gardeners. I went around to our local hardware/produce place this morning and ordered a new waterproof coat. I’ve only got a showerproof one and a drizabone. The drizabone is not really good for walking or working in. And it’s over 25 years old now. So I’ve ordered a bright yellow one of these:

And I saw gumboots while I was there, so I bought some of these too:

Because of the drought years my gumboots have been spider colonised. And they aren’t too comfy for trekking in the bush anyway. These Otway ones are snuggly, especially with my bamboo thick socks on.

:)

It doesn’t show in the photo…..the heater is alight.

I’ve been sitting sorting out figures and stuff. Shortly going to visit the neighbours with my mini passionfruit sponges. I suspect between the four of us we might be able to eat all 8 of them.

>>have you already collected your own seed buffy?<<

I don’t keep seed. Every couple of years I buy a packet from Diggers. Because I am interplanting them for colour only, I don’t bother with seed collecting. I presume they would contaminate each other though. Maybe you would get pink! Or blotchy!

thanks for that.
the red flowering b.b. is a bit rare – why else would they put 12 seeds instead of the normal 40 in a packet?
fingers crossed we will breed up the numbers a bit.
