Some psychiatrists and employers now find it suspicious for an individual to keep off Facebook, reports The Daily Mail. That’s because for today’s young generation, having Facebook is considered “normal,” while opting out is considered “abnormal.”
Employers may suspect that an applicant’s absence from the social network means the account is so full of offensive material that it had to be deleted. After all, 90% of recruiters check out candidates’ online profiles.
Similarly, psychologists see Facebook activity as a reflection of a healthy social life.
“The Internet has become a natural part of life,” psychologist Christopher Moeller told Germany’s Der Taggspiegel. “It’s possible that you get feelings of positive feedback through online friends.”
In excess, Moeller says, Facebook interactions can reinforce feelings of social anxiety experienced offline.
As the German magazine points out, both suspected Aurora theater gunman James Holmes and the Norwegian massacre shooter Anders Behring Breivik share an absence from Facebook. The publication went as far as to say that Facebook abstainers have reason to be suspected mass murderers.

Call me strange, but I don’t really find Facebook “sociable” at all. It’s all preset form-filling and box-clicking. A drab, formulaic substitute for social interaction.

It works for me as a tool to find artists/craftpeople and to keep informed about a wide variety of stuff. I’m also quick to delete people who annoy me with inane comments (Oh, too cute!!! LOL or lol) or who pray and/or post pictures of lit candles when 20 kids are massacred in a school.

“Your privacy is important to us.”
How many times have you heard this spiel? “Your privacy is important to us. Read our privacy policy.”
If your privacy was really important, would the websites that you visit every day, the ones that you use to share stories with family and connect with long-distance friends, need to continuously revise a contract to tell you so? If social media websites really did respect your privacy, would policies be so littered with jargon that the entire document reads like fine print?
One of the social media privacy (or “data use”) policies to capture the most heated attention is Facebook’s.
“A privacy policy is a disclosure document, whose purpose is to inform (and therefore protect) consumers,” Businessweek advised business owners. Yet all too often, there’s nothing informative about these unintelligible documents – and that may be the point.
Why the FTC Didn’t ‘Like’ Facebook’s Privacy Policy
“Confused by Facebook’s new privacy policy? You’re supposed to be,” read the title of Digital Trends’ blog post on the subject. It’s not just a subjective opinion, either. The social media site’s 2009 revisions to the privacy policy received such heated attention that the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed official complaints against the social media giant for what The New York Times referred to as “deceptive practices.” The specific policies that have come under fire include the automatic public display of personal information such as users’ names, location, gender, and (certain) photographs, as well as social media activity such as “liked” pages and friends lists…
“Ever since Facebook was founded in 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, its chief executive, has pushed its users to share more information about themselves,” The New York Times wrote in 2010. “Time and again, users have pushed back, complaining that some new feature or setting on the site violated their privacy.”

I don’t agree with this at all. Anecdote alert: I dropped facebook for several months. Despite my friends having other contact details such as my phone number and email, I never heard from any of them. This leads me to a couple of conclusions: 1) They’re not actually friends and 2) Facebook has replaced other forms of communication, not just face-to-face contact. Perhaps the “reflection of a healthy social life” comes across from communications within the medium and photos of the person with other people when the reality is that perhaps the person is actually a loner who prefers their own company than that of other people? After all, people on Facebook typically whinge about their day, garnering sympathy for their plight… Misery loves company.

Based on my own example, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find that many people who chat quite a lot online don’t mingle much in person. OTOH, you would also expect that people who do mingle much in person would also probably chat a lot online, so it’s not a black & white picture.

I am on facebook and find it useful for keeping in touch with mostly ex military mates which also plugs into a lot of clubs and associations. Bit of a problem with suicides at the moment, with condolence messages almost daily. My friends list is only small, I am not interested in having hundreds of “friends”, all those on my list are close enough to tap for money if required. It is also useful for planning parties, otherwise it is like herding cats.

That has been changed to an airport pickup and drop.
Yeh I just caught up. How far do you live from the airport?
137km as the crow flys.

Fair enough. But funnily it is an easy drive, highway all the way, mostly 110 kmh and no traffic lights until you pretty much hit the terminal. I spent more time commuting 30km when I was in Sydney.

Doesn’t sound so bad…
I’m 15 mins from the airport by freeway at the moment, but far enough away not to be able to hear them.

wait, what do they say about business and pleasure?
Ok the borrowing money thing seems to have confused people. How about mates enough to do an airport pickup and drop off. Clearer?
oh… you mean the sort of mates you can call if you ever wake up in a hotel room and there’s dead hooker in the bed…
And how embarrassing is it when you realise they aren’t that good a friend!

Oo…my remaining siblings (3 brothers and 1 sister) are not on fb. Certainly makes sense for me.

Reminds me of a cartoon I saw.. A funeral with only 4-5 people there. One commented to the other.. “But he had over a hundred friends on Facebook”.
Had? Death doesn’t stop you having fb friends. My dead dog has over 200 fb friends.

facebook – is there anything it cannot do?
1) I have been researching the first mayor of Sandgate. The ‘official’ history has him coming out alone on the “Fortitude”. I first discovered that hae came with one relative, probably a cousin. Yesterday morning, I discovered that two of his sisters were on the ship, and I quickly found out a bit about them. Last night, on a page named Vintage Queensland, a photo of a son of one of those sisters was posted. (He was a quite famous photographer in and around Ipswich.}
2) I have been posting some photos taken by my grandmother’s half brother. He had quite an unusual set of forenames. His nephew also had the same forenames. I was contacted by the granddaughter of that nephew. (We are half second cousins once removed.)

Like many things – it depends on how you use it. I see fb as a tool.

The point being if he had so many FB friends, why didn’t he have more at the funeral.

“..The publication went as far as to say that Facebook abstainers have reason to be suspected mass murderers…”
I tend to agree, same applies to the unborn, the dead, perhaps even ones pets .
Individuals wont be properly liberated until they all start masturbating in public. Facebook is the next best thing.
