I assume you attempted to do the Shockwave installation from http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/
From http://www.ehow.com/how_5076982_install-shockwave-activex.html
Click the “Agree and Install Now” button. A dialog box should appear asking you where to save the program. It doesn’t matter where you save it, as long as you remember where it is so you can run it once it has finished downloading. If you are presented an option to save or run the program instead, choose the option to run the program. This will eliminate the hassle of downloading and then running the installation program.

Always reboot your browser after installing browser plugins or ActiveX components. Adobe recommends a Windows system with a Pentium 4 equivalent or better processor; Windows XP with service pack 2 or the Vista operating system; a minimum of 512 MB of RAM; and Internet Explorer 6.0 or better, or Firefox 2.0 or better browsers. Adobe recommends a Macintosh system with a G3 or better processor; OS X version 10.4 or greater; a minimum of 512 MB of RAM; and Safari 2.0 or better browser.
And from http://www.ehow.com/facts_7300787_adobe-activex_.html
Adobe ActiveX is a control method utilized by Adobe to install or debug the Adobe Shockwave and Adobe Flash browser plug-ins. The ActiveX control is only utilized within the Internet Explorer browser.
So you should be able to use Shockwave with other browsers.
FWIW, it appears that I have a Shockwave player plug-in with this version of Firefox running on Linux, but I don’t know if I’ve ever utilised it. :)
