Looks like being a lovely day Sunday.

Come down to Sandgate, have a fish’n‘chip lunch on the foreshore somewhere, and fit in some time to visit the Sandgate Museum, 150 Rainbow Street. Gold Coin donation entry fee to the display about the Pier and its proposed renewal. after the Lord Mayor has gone (about 10:30). My award nominated book $15. Other books range $10 to $20. Bring dosh. Historical Society is self-funded, and relies on days like this to bump up the cash reserves a little.

The book looks interesting Geoff but the cover’s a bit random. Lots of empty space at the top with the secondary text squashed in right near the bottom. You need me to respace it all for you.

Mr Car, will you stop trying to get down with The Kids and using “random” in a completely meaningless context.

Having said that, the cover layout could be a little improved.

It’s not meaningless in this context, it means that not much design went into it. “I’ll stick the title somewhere near the top and the rest of it underneath”, with little detailed attention to how the spacing would work aesthetically.

‘And I’ll just centre everything because that will be easy’

I take little responsibility for the cover – done by others. Only 200 printed -If it goes into another print run we’ll do something about it. Also, it was never intended to be a big deal.

In addition, over the years a ‘style’ of sorts has developed for the Society’s publications, and moving away from that is a slow process. Some of the stalwarts are afraid of sudden change.

yeah. That bunch of stuff on the bottom had to be that wording, otherwise it wouldn’t have been printed for free. I would have liked the project stuff on the back cover.

Still, it got us an award.

It’s what it is, it reflects the period well and that could be lost with workshopping.
There is an old book by Petrie I think, his recollections and it has an old bloke sitting in a chair smoking a pipe, it’s a terrific cover but probably not by todays standards.

It should be a fun day. When the Counicl lady said she would bring down a big display board, I was thinking heavy and clumsy. Nope. Looked like a big hatbox on wheels when she got it out of the car, and it just sprung into shape in a a couple of minutes.

Doesn’t show the trickiness behind it.

I think it is too late to RSVP for the morning gig, which is limited to max 50 people because of our small premises. Besides, you don’t want to listen to a (short) speech from me.

It is a nautical themed event so there is no reason to mention futtocks.
Tell the Mayor, his wife and assembled dignitaries that you have vivid memories of rubbing your had along exposed futtocks at the beach many years ago.

Seems like we need about a dozen bums on seats to make the place look properly full for the Lord Mayor. Anyone who can get there by 9:30/09:45 would be welcome, and would score a cuppa as well.

Many Thanks! Y’see, Deagon Ward in which Sandgate sits is strongly Labor on the personal following of the local councillor, so Lord Mayor is not the most popular person on the planet. Need to make LM feel welcome (but not too welcome).

Home now. Had fun, a cuppa and a few nibbles. Geoff was chatting with Wayne Swann when we arrived, and introduced us. The Lord Mayor was late. Speeches were made. Geoff’s work was praised. Photos were taken (by othes…). We bought the book, which Geoff then signed.

All in all a good morning.

Proud of you Mr D!

‘Twas a grand day. Took in about $500 all up. Many interesting people came along. Seems I didn’t make too much of a dick of myself. Marcus, the BCC Heritage architect, found more Brisbane history amongst our guests than he probably expected to find. Met quite a few others ‘‘off the internet”. And the weather was just intolerably beautiful.
