Strewth! Just more Seppo crap really but whatever. Fair dinkum, I liked it better when we had an identity which was different to everyone elses. Then we suddenly became a novelty because we spoke differently. Chuckin shrimps on barbies etc. Now we’re just becoming the same as everyone else has been for years. (Except we’re fatter than everyone else now apparently.) It’s not new lingo, it’s only new to us. Digger.

pub talk is great – it flows nicely, has a bit of exaggeration and contains all those slang images of hardworking shearers. so yes i agree we should develop our own version of english.
trouble is
- most pub talk is highly prejudiced
- aussie slang always had a fair splattering of canadian, english and american embedded in it.
- the young will decide the future not us.

chuckle – not now but in the future your generation will decide what the lingo is.
the ockerisms that longy and others like so much are a rural type language – but your generation is more urbane – and those mobile phones – wow – they’re like dick tracy’s watch – phone, camera, worldwide sms messaging, tv, video, emergency signal – those little mobiles have changed our world – and will probably change our spoken language in time.

I am a bit on the side of sms speak. English is a silly language and parts of sms talk covers some of the faults IMHO. But it would be sad to lose all the old ockerisms too.

i think ockerism invaded america for a while – peter weir, mel gibson and nicole kidman – but oddly enough the only out come i could detect was the yankees seem to have lost their nasally twang – which use to drive me nuts.
