Subject: Laptop turns itself off

Hi all…

I have my HP 630 laptop, which I’m using at work. While doing simple tasks like typing letters or whatever else, I am also converting video using TMPGEnc. The fan is sounding a lot louder when it’s converting video.

Twice now, in the last 10 minutes, the laptop has shut itself down. I am assuming it is because it is under a heavier load and is having trouble keeping the core temperature down and shuts down as a self-protection thing?

Is there some way I can get this video converted without the laptop shutting itself down?

Mine overheats ridiculously too. I have mine propped up on a laptop stand. It allows air to circulate easier and it’s not shut off since I’ve been using it.

Sounds like the heatsink has clogged up with dirt/fluff and it is shutting down due to heat. Reboot into the bios and one of the screens should be telling you the CPU and system temperature.

The good news is that it is fixable, the bad news is that it needs to be dismantled.

Glad it can be fixed :) Doesn’t matter if it needs to be dismantled, I’ve replaced the screen twice in this one already, and had the lower cover taken off so many times I can’t remember anymore.

Surprised it still works :)

Agreed.

My laptop was doing something similar. When I pulled it apart, I found a strip of fluffy crap almost 10mm thick between the fan and the heatsink.

Google for your model, there will be dismantling instructions somewhere. Possibly even on Youtube
