Subject: Hard drive full up.
I have an external hard drive connected by USB to the box of my computer. I use it mostly for backing up photos. I was recently signalled that it is full and I have spent all afternoon transferring the photos over to a larger external hard drive. Although I have now deleted them from the first external hard drive, it is still signalling as full. Have I missed a step, or could the drive be malfunctioning? Any thoughts?

Check to see if the external hard drive has a Recycle Bin.

How do I do that? Is it under properties?

Oh yes I’ve found that now. I emptied it and it freed up about 8 gigs. Thing is, I’ve deleted almost th entire content of the drive but it does’nt seem to be getting any emptier.

Have you tried turning if off and on again (unplug it, then plug it back in…)

What filesystem is on it? If it’s ntfs there can be data associated with files that’s invisible to most software. Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fork_%28file_system%29#Microsoft. It’s called an Alternate Data Stream. Note that I’m just guessing; your issue could have nothing to do with ADS.
