Subject: Establishing a vegie garden?

Hi all,

I’m new to the vegetable garden thing. Any up front basic tips? How much sun should a vegie garden get?

When do you normally plant things? What is easy to grow?

Thnaks,

Egg.

whats your approx location egg – nearest big town and state?
upfront tips – fertile soil and no poisons.
full north facing sun is best and wind breaks to the west (usually).
vegies are normally planted in spring.
easiest to grow is radish – followed by – silver beet, herbs, garlic, lettuce and melons.
all of this depends on your location
… and welcome.

Thanks Pepe,

Nearest town is Mackay in North Qld. Can you test the soild to see if it needs anything? Should you fertilize (existing garden with general plants) in winter if they look a bit average?

Thanks,

Egg.

I have been growing vegetable’s for about a year, there are other people who have much more experience , but I’m buoyed on with my successe’s , so I can help a little bit.
What is your area/ climate ? Soil perparation is the key, check out a couple site’s I’ve added below on the subject.
Happy gardening.

i’m in south australia – near Gawler.
your seasons are quite different up there.
yes you can have a soil test done – and yes you should fertilise any plants that haven’t been fertilised for a year.

for someone starting off growing veges, I can highly recommend Peter Cundle’s “Patch from Scratch” which is available at ABC shops, or you could borrow it at your local library (DVD). It takes you through the basics of preparing the soil, seasonal plantings and crop rotation.

and welcome Egg Chen :)

In Mackay you should grow your vegies like tomatoes, capsicum, etc. in the winter because your summers will be too hot for them. Plus you have to contend with fruit fly in the summer.
