The hemispheric long wave pattern has been relatively fast moving in recent weeks. There are five main troughs. Currently the most significant troughs are near the longitudes of the southwest Indian Ocean, eastern Australia, New Zealand, the south Pacific, the southeast Pacific, and the Atlantic Ocean.
Summary:
Over southern and eastern Australia the cold front events with potential to bring widespread rain are now expected about 8 September to 12 September, 12 September to 16 September, and 18 September to 22 September. Rain events originating in the tropics and moving south are possible about 10 September to 14 September, and 23 September to 27 September.
Over Western Australia the strongest cold fronts should occur about 8 September to 12 September, 13 September to 17 September, and 17 September to 21 September.

a warm day yesterday for the parade and earth festival, Costa was here, today mainly sunny, about 22degC, clouds building, a few spits.
we need a good lot of rain and wind to clean the place up :)

I’ve had to abandon the mowing…..I looked like a red traffic light after a bit more than an hour. But I got a goodly amount done. I’ll do a bit more tomorrow….I’ll have to be outside anyway as the floor man will be doing the hall and kitchen floating floor. Which means I have to do some serious clearing out of stuff from the kitchen tonight.

Good morning Gardeners. We have around 8 degrees, high cloud and wind. Base levels around 30-40km/hr since the early hours, gusting up to a bit under 70. Around 4.00am the power went out and that made the fire listening set go loudly staticy (needs new batteries or replacement). It wasn’t out for long, but it’s a bit difficult to really drop back off to sleep with such gusts around. You would think the SWWA people might have taken at least some of the energy out of it before sending it over here……but I suppose there is a reason they put the windfarm just south of us.

:)

Poor buggars…and it looks like it’s going to hit the “Asian” mainland as well…dilly question: if it’s autumn in the northern hemisphere, how come they’re getting typhoon / cyclonic / hurricane weather now?

Well the southern hemisphere is now gearing up for its’ Wet, which includes cyclonic weather, and that’s the “summer” down here. Maybe Typhoon Yolande (is that right?) is a freak of the weather systems..

If you go here and down to Figure 6, it shows that the Northern Hemisphere typhoon / cyclone weather peaks during July / August, and in the Southern Hemisphere during January / February. Of course our experience in Oz clearly shows that cyclones can still develop in December and March, so there’s an interval of about 4 months really. Typhoon Yolanda is a late bloomer by the looks of it…very late!

45 mls / 180 points … last night at the aerodrome, and about the same here, I reckon.

Lovely soaking stuff, I really thought it was going to slide around the south but now I think the BOM radar has got a patch missing…kind of like a Bermuda Triangle, excepting the weather comes out the other side…

Chooks are busy scratching…

We got another lovely soaking storm last night, there was a hail “possible” warning but fortunately it came to nothing…

Cloudy and muggy as today, but the back yard is greening up nicely… the cows dropping their calves will be grateful for the green pick…

Rain dropping all around the district, thunder and lightning but thankfully no strong wind…bit of an early start to the Wet but better than none at all…guess some farmers will be waiting for a few dry days so they can plant into it, the soil being mostly blacksoil around here…

Just looking at the BOM radar, your farmer neighbour may have been hopeful about the forthcoming rain?

There is a monsoonal trough left over from that cyclone of last week, slooooowly wending across the Top End…

And it looks like Victoria is enjoying Southerlies straight from the Antarctic?

It occurred to me later that it was more likely that there was a high demand on the baling machine and that was the only time he could get it.

Yes, that happens with the cotton, too…so they do one run, real fast, then a month or so later, after the rush (all going well), they do a more leisurely and thorough run…not all of them, just the ones who have to hire harvesters (or find someone to drive them, cotton growing is oh-so-labour intensive during it’s short season)…

If you look on the BOM website, at the colour 4 – day forecast maps, it predicts rain across much of the western side of the central interior…that’ll scare the lizards…

Wasa different story this morning. They said three days 20-40 mm.. 80% chance.. Now they are saying one day,
Wed. 90%
10-20mm The other news is that Mon and Tues are going to be between 37º and 39º.

and Mrs rb told me that whikle I was out at work today she bumped into a big brown snake once in the carport and again at the back door. Reckons she’s scared to go outside.
