It was only, what, about 3 weeks ago that Mrs V and I went to Geoff’s book launch. The Brisbane Lord Mayor gave a speech. Geoff introduced us to his mate “Swannie” (Wayne Swan).
Have fallen in big heap since Friday night, lymphoma has returned with a vengance. Rev’d Cuz Julyan Drew sorry I can’t give you the opportunity of conducting my funeral, it will be too soon and too far away.

This sucks. Geoff had been fighting it off for so long that I had come to think of him as the invincible man. He had just released a book, and very recently posted pics of himself having a good time at a party somewhere.
I assumed that he was mostly ok. He was still getting the “goblins” to help him defeat ruperts return, and I thought that he was if not winning, then at least he was breaking even.:(

Such a shock for so many of us.
It was a very sudden decline. The tests last week were inconclusive and he was still hopeful that the lymphoma hadn’t returned. Then on the Friday he reported that he suddenly felt much worse than usual, and that was his last post here.

Thankyou for you. Thankyou for being a font of knowledge, your tireless crusades against trolling, your dedication to Sandgate’s history, your own ancestry and the wealth of knowledge you hold about rocks and all types of rockology.
All of us are so sad that your final journey is so quick and so rough- the mysteries of Geefer’s Cyclical Fever are now lost in the mists of time as the goblins and Dr Mark just couldn’t keep up their good work anymore. You’re a fighter who never gave up, even when you were feeling bunnings crook.

At the present, it would be best to show the family. More than that, is still too far off.
I suspect Geoff’s family know how well he is respected, and my thoughts is that we should probably just leave it at that. We are in uncharted waters here with the imminent loss of member of our community, and we must be mindful that we are only a small part of his extremely rich and eventful life and have not yet had to decide what is appropriate and what is too much.
Also, although we know the boundaries of acceptable joking, it is quite possible for it to be misconstrued by the family.

A man of wide knowledge and many interests. He had a lifelong love of woodwork and old boats, and was always happy to offer advice regarding furniture restoration and so on. A particularly helpful and pleasant poster, which made it all the more mysterious when he was unaccountably confined to the dungeons for a long stretch in SSSF, by the clueless moderators at the time. But he took it all in good humour :)

Dad passed away early this morning with his wife by his side. The return of his lymphoma would prove no quarter. We can now take comfort in the fact that he is finally at peace.

Actually it was only on Sunday. Last week he was still optimistic because the bone marrow tests hadn’t really shown that the cancer was back.

I never met Geoff and only ever interacted with him impersonally on these forums. It feels weird to feel so sad.
Goodbye Geoff. RIP.
My Dad died of lymphoma, after a year or so of remission following chemo. But when it came back he had time for another course of chemo and was still with us for several months, getting gradually weaker, so it was so surprise at all in the end.
Geoff just seemed to very quickly run out of options, while still living a fairly active life.

There’s so much I’d like to say about Geoff d, even though I never actually met him in the flesh, but Divine Angel did a better job than I can in post 386710.
Vale Geoff. You were one of nature’s gentlemen, and knowing you has enriched my life.
It is sad to know that I’ll now never be able to meet him. However I’m glad that I met the man online because without that I would have never known the calibre of the man.
Geoff stood on the edge with dignity and fortitude for such a long time. But ultimately the last grain falls through the Lifetimer.
I am thankful the mercy of swiftness was granted.

That’s a good idea. They usually hand out lavender or something similar to toss in but I tend to grab a spray of gum blossoms or something from the trees in the cemetery.

It was a lovely service. Bill, Spocky, PWM, pommiejohn and I attended. I dragged Spocky up with me and we spoke about how Geoff was a great mate to us even though many of us never met him in real life but that doesn’t diminish our friendship. Roughy, you’ll be pleased to know the casket was draped with native flora.

Quite a few. As well as family and friends, there were people from the Historical Society, work and various other projects Geoff was a part of.

From my point of view.. many of us are viewed differently by many.. but the one thing that stood about Geoff was that we were none of us in delusion with where we stood with him.
I’m not sure, roughy. They flipped through it when I gave it them and I lost sight after the service. Mrs D was very upset, understandably, but grateful that so many people were able to attend. She’s really lovely even in such hard times.

It was a great service, Geoff would have enjoyed it.
DA and Spock spoke some lovely words in tribute to Geoff on behalf of the forums.
He had a remarkable and full life, although he never Morris danced that we know of.
A man can’t be perfect, petert.
I imagine there’s a good number of men who Morris dance in the privacy of their own homes, but don’t brag about it to their friends.

Not being able to get to the funeral, I considered dropping some flowers off for Kom but it may be a bit intrusive. I’m shit at knowing how to handle these situations. Shedding a tear here.
