Thank you for your kind message Mandi. Dad has stopped responding to anything and his body is slowly shutting down. All that can be done is to make him comfortable over the next few days. I will keep you informed.

The Sailing Ship – Bishop Charles Henry Brent (1862-1929)

What is dying? I am standing on the seashore. A ship sails to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean. She is an object and I stand watching her Till at last she fades from the horizon, And someone at my side says, “She is gone!” Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all; She is just as large in the masts, hull and spars as she was when I saw her, And just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination. The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her; And just at the moment when someone at my side says, “She is gone”, There are others who are watching her coming, And other voices take up a glad shout, “There she comes” – and that is dying.

This sucks. Geoff had been fighting it off for so long that I had come to think of him as the invincible man. He had just released a book, and very recently posted pics of himself having a good time at a party somewhere.

I assumed that he was mostly ok. He was still getting the “goblins” to help him defeat ruperts return, and I thought that he was if not winning, then at least he was breaking even.

It was a very sudden decline. The tests last week were inconclusive and he was still hopeful that the lymphoma hadn’t returned. Then on the Friday he reported that he suddenly felt much worse than usual, and that was his last post here.

Seems to me that Geoff’s life was extraordinary well spent, yet he would not lament his own passing; but rather acknowledge the comfort that is ‘to have ‘scaped world’s and flesh’s rage, and if no other misery, yet age.’

I will miss Geoff. In my finer moments I have though I might be a little bit like him. He wont miss me.

This is what the award was for:

http://www.nationaltrust.org.au/qld/HeritageAwards

The community of Queensland is invited each year to participate in the NTQ Heritage Awards.

The National Trust of Queensland welcomes nominations from individuals, businesses,
government authorities, professional bodies and community organisations. There are no nomination entry fees.

The National Trust of Queensland, Queensland Heritage Council and QUT, dedicate these awards to everyone in the community who contributes to the conservation and enjoyment of Queensland’s heritage.

The Awards recognise achievements in identifying, conserving and promoting our cultural heritage.

Previously known as the John Herbert Memorial Awards, in 2004 the awards were renamed and an overall winning certificate is named the John Herbert Memorial Award in honour of the late
Honourable John Herbert MLA, President of the National Trust from 1971 to 1974.

More pacifically:

http://www.nationaltrust.org.au/qld/DavidEadesAwardRecipients

Though nominated for the QHC Heritage Award, the assessment panel consider that the Sandgate Town Hall Restoration Project equally satisfies the criteria for the David Eades award. Not only an exemplary conservation project ensuring a continued use for this important civic building, it also focuses on sustainable outcomes through utilising efficiencies in energy and water consumption, and in providing ventilation and cooling. The Brisbane City Council is to be congratulated on its excellent series of nominations for this year’s QHC awards, which show how governments can lead by example in the preservation of historic buildings.

Big night for the Sandgate area: National Trust Qld Awards last night:

Silver Award in the David Eades Awards for sustainability in Sandgate Town Hall restoration

Silver Award for the National Trust Community Awards for Sandgate Historical Soc’s publication “The Largest Ships: How Sandgate Got Its Pier”.

I think Geoff Drew was rightly chuffed to receive the award for his book after all the hard work in researching and writing the early story of the Pier.

It was a pleasure to attend the evening with friends from the Sandgate Historical Society to celebrate the occasion.

Congratulations Sandgate Historical Society!! — feeling awesome with Geoff Drew at Old Government House.

Dear Geoff,

You won’t read these words but the sentiment remains as if you will.

Thankyou for you. Thankyou for being a font of knowledge, your tireless crusades against trolling, your dedication to Sandgate’s history, your own ancestry and the wealth of knowledge you hold about rocks and all types of rockology.

All of us are so sad that your final journey is so quick and so rough- the mysteries of Geefer’s Cyclical Fever are now lost in the mists of time as the goblins and Dr Mark just couldn’t keep up their good work anymore. You’re a fighter who never gave up, even when you were feeling bunnings crook.

I’m so glad you finished and published your book about Sandgate’s pier and were well enough to speak at the launch. I’m so sorry I missed it! I’ll never get my signed copy now :(

On behalf of the forum, I’d like to say we all miss you already; your last post was a week ago. FNDC shall be in your honour (I’m sure DO has saved some of that goop beer to drink) as we toast a mate. Cheers.

I suspect Geoff’s family know how well he is respected, and my thoughts is that we should probably just leave it at that. We are in uncharted waters here with the imminent loss of member of our community, and we must be mindful that we are only a small part of his extremely rich and eventful life and have not yet had to decide what is appropriate and what is too much.

Yes. He was one of those posters who make me feel rather vulgar and extreme when I’m posting in full opinionated mode :)

A man of wide knowledge and many interests. He had a lifelong love of woodwork and old boats, and was always happy to offer advice regarding furniture restoration and so on. A particularly helpful and pleasant poster, which made it all the more mysterious when he was unaccountably confined to the dungeons for a long stretch in SSSF, by the clueless moderators at the time. But he took it all in good humour :)

Is there a cancer charity that Geoff would have recommended that I could make a small donation to?

At first I thought flowers for his funeral from his online friends but maybe a donation to a charity might help in a more practical way.

That last photo of him receiving his award that Alex posted is how I’ll remember him, it’s a great photo.
It shows a rightfully proud man receiving his deserved recognition but still with the cheeky grin.

Dear all,

This is (Geoff’s children) using his Facebook account on his behalf.

Dad passed away early this morning with his wife by his side. The return of his lymphoma would prove no quarter. We can now take comfort in the fact that he is finally at peace.

Thank you for all your love and support.

My Dad died of lymphoma, after a year or so of remission following chemo. But when it came back he had time for another course of chemo and was still with us for several months, getting gradually weaker, so it was so surprise at all in the end.

Geoff just seemed to very quickly run out of options, while still living a fairly active life.

That’s a good idea. They usually hand out lavender or something similar to toss in but I tend to grab a spray of gum blossoms or something from the trees in the cemetery.

It was a lovely service. Bill, Spocky, PWM, pommiejohn and I attended. I dragged Spocky up with me and we spoke about how Geoff was a great mate to us even though many of us never met him in real life but that doesn’t diminish our friendship. Roughy, you’ll be pleased to know the casket was draped with native flora.

It never pleases me to see flowers picked but in knowing the reasons why, some balance may be perceived. Thanks be to your influence on my life, Geoff.

From my point of view.. many of us are viewed differently by many.. but the one thing that stood about Geoff was that we were none of us in delusion with where we stood with him.

It’s doubtless from some ancient wooden cask, although probably not the one Poe’s unfortunate character encountered.

Fat coke is still my weakness, but I’m only allowed to drink it during nights and afternoon shifts (and only at work). Rest of the time, pepsi max. Don’t like diet coke or coke zero.

It was a pleasure.

I was DA’s wingman. She did the condolences book and decided to speak in the Tributes section. I just repeated some of the stuff that I had read here after she spoke.

It was a moving ceremony.

Hugs back.

I spoke to his sister that almost moved down to Wollongong. But she is not moving down there anymore.

Not being able to get to the funeral, I considered dropping some flowers off for Kom but it may be a bit intrusive. I’m shit at knowing how to handle these situations. Shedding a tear here.
