Let criminals buy their way out of jail, Gina Rinehart says

Mining billionaire Gina Rinehart has proposed a new way to broaden Australia’s tax base – allowing convicted criminals to buy their way out of jail.

In a column for Australian Resources and Investment magazine, Mrs Rinehart says the Government should consider letting non-violent offenders pay to get out of prison – or pay to avoid serving time altogether – because Australia needs more workers and taxpayers as the population ages.

I think it removes any deterrent if people know they can just buy their way out of it at the end of the day. If the prospect of not being able to vote or travel overseas for a set period of time is not a real penalty.

A reasonable amount one would think.

If you don’t get a suspended sentence in consideration of the good and charitable works, pillar of society etc in the statement of mitigation it might get you into a low security farm prison and a minimum period to be served.

Her weight serves the same role as Palmer’s, in reasserting the old “fatcat” sterotype, before obesity became more strongly associated with poor white trash rather than rich white trash.
