The gaur (Bos gaurus) is a species of wild cattle living in southern Asia, from India to southern China and down to Malaysia. There are perhaps 30000-40000 living gaurs, but it is considered “vulnerable” due to its habitat being destroyed. It is a protected animal in all countries in which it is found.
The gaur is the world’s largest living bovine. Males can be more than 3 metres long and stand up tp 2.2 metres high at the shoulder. That’s huge.
I have been trying to find some images online of a large gaur bull next to a person to illustrate scale, but haven’t found any.
Not surprising, really, I wouldn’t be game to stand near one either.
