“Smart” micro student houses set to go ahead in Sweden

Swedish architectural firm Tengbom has come up with a creative new accommodation model that squeezes student living into a compact 10 sq m (108 sq ft) footprint. The Smart Student Unit aims to offer an inexpensive and sustainable housing choice for students in Sweden that could reduce the current residency rents by half.

I’d be okay (apart from space for books) but people of normal height might feel a tad cramped.
Just cover that nice roof with solar panels and they’d be awesome, even if scaled up a wee bit.

Yes, and in mine there’s probably 30ish shelf-metres of books, and I still have some boxes to unpack.

Need roof space to angle solar panels.. useful book space.. carefully considered.

Your average donga could be made just as good with a few modifications.
The irregular shape means they can’t be stacked into two or three levels.

at a young and naive age i thought that sleeping overnight in a shipping container was a good idea. A shipping container that is parked in a freight train depot is not prime real estate!

Oh – I meant one that was specially converted. Or alternatively a factory built portable cabin built to the same dimensions as a shipping container to it can use the same transport vehicles.

One of my brothers does live in a shipping container. In fact two. One stacked on top of the other, a hole cut, a ladder positioned, and voila, an upstairs bedroom :)

Bugger, I just went to my go to program for unit conversions “convert” so I could make a pithy comment about one square = 1 student, and how these metric young ones have it so easy. It doesn’t have ‘square’ as an area.
Anyhows, we only got 9.3 sq.m in my day, and that was considered excessive.

What about parking? Serial there is a crap fest down in Burwood where a developer is building a huge student accommodation but only provides parking for about a quarter of the students. They might have figured only 1 in 4 have cars but they were wrong. Students are parking in all the side streets creating so much havoc the developer has been forced to make changes on the fly.

Interesting. Parking takes up a lot of space.
We had the same thing here with the new suburban railway. They planned lots of feeder bus services between stations and the local housing. But it seems everyone just prefers to park and ride. Result was the same, every square inch of parking space on kerbs, on median strips etc around the stations was filled with cars.

I had a very smart North Adelaide flat in my art student days (paid for by my parents :)) in which I hosted some very agreeable dinner parties. Have quite vivid memories of stretching out on the carpet in front of the gas fire with a brandy and a big flat spliff, listening to Bach while reading Dante. Then having a bubble bath (in a bathroom which was very much more luxurious than this cottage can boast), before spending the evening in the local sauna.

The council was the one that seeing the crapfest and also responding to people who couldn’t exit or enter their drives and sick f bins not being picked up on garbage nights because cars blocked the trucks forced the change in plans costing the developer millions.

In the student days I had quite long blonde hair, but certainly not afro and no sideburns. I wore nicely tailored classic suits during the day (including button-up waistcoat and silk ties), which was unique for an art student, but more laid back gear for the discos & saunas etc.

A hotel room I stayed in in Awajicho, Tokyo, was a miracle of miniaturisation. It was the only place where I could touch the front door, get to the wardrobe, open the refrigerator, and open the bathroom door all without getting out of bed. The entire bathroom was made out of a single piece of moulded plastic and looked larger than it was because of full width mirrors along three walls. I’d wished at the time that I could have drawn an accurate plan of the place.
The Swedish place is two storey, with no bath or shower.

Article in Readers Digest. Apparently that 10 square metres of floor space can be reduced to just over 6 square metres.
