There is no dark side of the moon.
the side that faces away from the sun is dark.

sure there is, i’m looking at the album right now

No it’s not Boris –
There are always photons from some region of space impacting the so called “dark side”.
are these photons visible to a human eye though?
Visibility to the human eye is not implied by the definition of dark.
what is the definition then?
Google (if you can believe them) gives – “With little or no light”.

I can’t really recall all the details, but I do remember it has something to do with an orange.
Actually, I can see where that may cause me to stumble.
Google (if you can believe them) gives – “With little or no light”.
so my interpretation was correct then.
Alright then (rolls up sleeves) – the definition of side is loose.
yep, spheres don’t have sides.

what about outside and inside?

So you are conceding.

soooo stumpy, you saying the moon is hollow? i guess that is where the lunaticks live.

It is unhelpful to repeat large images…
There is no dark side of the moon.
——————————————————-
But yes,
This has been known before the release of the album.
Other than that…
Excellent work.
So, without even discussing the libration of the moon, which means that the bit visible from Earth varies, and we see in total about 59% of the “light side” of the moon, the line between the light and dark sides varies.
And as mentioned previously “side of sphere” is meaningless.
Can we agree then, that while there is no side of the moon in a pedantic sense and therefore no dark side, common usage would dictate that there is a dark side.. whilst scientifically speaking, there is a large dark slightly less than hem-spherical portion of the moon which is ill-defined at boundaries?
People who say “dark side of the moon” probably mean “far side of the moon”, but have been confused by Pink Floyd.

When I hear “Dark side of the moon”, I think of the inside.
Is a bald statement to be treated any more or less seriously than a bold statement?
>When I hear “Dark side of the moon”, I think of the inside of a cat.
fixed

Yes, I suppose that doesn’t help the forum hardware/data usage.. ;)
I fail to see the irony however.Oh, very bloody helpful comments indeed from you lot :P

No to both. But much more seriously than an extremely hairy statement.

No Ian. We see 59% of the ‘whole moon’ due to libration. We see very close to 100% of the ‘light side’ of the moon. We also see very close to 100% of the ‘dark side’ of the moon about two weeks later.

Wait, what? Can you please explain that some more, please?
I thought the Moon was in a state called ‘Tidal Lock’ that meant we only every really saw one side…?

From the FOR of point on earth following the moon’s obit this is irrelevant to this discussion (I think).

What we don’t see is the far side of the moon, light or dark, unless you are an Apollo driver.
Oh, right. Yes.

Well … they aren’t exactly a side but I thought it might be pertinent to mention there are some dark parts of the moon

A bit darker than the darker bit.

Careful, this discussion lost it’s point after the OP was pointed out to be wrong very early on. It is not nice to run around telling everyone else they post are pointless in what has turned into a more general thread.
So… default forum discussion mode.
