When you take a long exposure photo of moving cars.. or boats… the photo shows the lights (as lines) on the vessel but does not show the vessel itself, in fact it looks like there’s nothing there at all…. why isn’t there a long blur of whatever colour the vehicle is?

it is there it has just been burned over by the subsequent intervening photons after the vehicle passes

the lights have enough photon output to permanently burn the film

The lights are just that – light (light is everything in photography) whereas the vehicles are only reflecting the ambient light…

the street lights.. other car’s lights.. shop lighting..

Quite often you can see it, but it usually seems to make for a bad photo so people don’t publish or share those ones.

One needs a lot of street lights and shiny car reflections, window reflections and etc or one needs to leave the shutter open a lot longer.

If you’re using say, a 30 second exposure the car is only in the shot for a few seconds, but the camera is recording the rest of the scene ( ie the road where the car was ) for the rest of the exposure. If you look closely you might see evidence of the car, especially if it’s a bright colour and there’s a lot of street lighting.

As I said.. a lot of reflected light is required to see moving objects in the dark and for that the objects need to be reflecting the light..

Trees stand like guardians at the top of Lake Wakatipu on New Zealand’s South Island. Says Brad Grove, a member of our Your Shot community: “I first discovered these trees by the Glenorchy jetty back in April 2011 and had never really been happy with my efforts to shoot them.” Grove achieved this HDR image in June 2012, after approaching the trees from a different direction. “It was minus 4 on a very cold morning, and the sun had just broken the horizon behind me,” he says. “The composition fell into place, and I took seven exposures hoping I had enough data to produce the image I could see in my head.”

Yeah but it is probably a composite image.

I’m one of the few photographers using digital format that doesn’t stack images.

I’d rephrase that to; I know he put the image in my head. Otherwise it would never have been shown to me.

I thought he suggested so but left confirmation to the spectator. But lets not quibble. I don’t quibble when I am lacking sleep.
