The axing of the Climate Commission should be no surprise. Environment Minister Greg Hunt has long flagged that it would go if the Coalition was elected.

The concern is whether the move is symbolic of a government that does not care about climate change.

After all, there are a lot of other climate bodies in its sights – the Climate Change Authority, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation – not to mention the carbon price. It is tearing down more than it is putting up.

In a week, the world’s leading climate science body – the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – will hand down perhaps the most important document on global warming. The six-year assessment of the status of climate change – how fast it is occurring and what threat it poses – will be long and technical. It will be almost impossible for the average person to navigate.

Having institutions such as a Climate Commission to distil such complex and confusing information is critical for a functioning democracy. To quote Thomas Jefferson: ‘‘Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government.’‘

The Coalition says it axed the commission as part of its plans to streamline the government. The Environment Department will continue to provide independent analysis and advice on climate change, it says.

Fair enough. It is the prerogative of a new government to organise the institutions at its behest in any way it sees fit.

But in removing the commission – which cost just $5 million over four years – the onus is now on the Abbott government to ensure its role is replicated elsewhere. Climate change might be complex, but it poses a significant danger to humanity. And the public should be well informed, not misinformed.

Here’s hoping that after the IPCC report is released, the Environment Department puts out an easy-to-digest summary for the public that outlines the report’s key findings. And then that the summary is well publicised by government frontbenchers.

After all , Abbott – in between a few famous comments to the contrary – has often said he believes climate change is ‘‘real, humanity does make a contribution to it and we’ve got to take effective action against it’‘. If he knows this, shouldn’t we all?

Any wonder so little money is put into education!

My friends on the sand spit at Wooli are feeling far more safe and secure now that our new our new ultra-conservative prime minister has acted quickly and decisively to abolish climate change.

Praise the Lord

I don’t believe that Abbott really thinks anything of the sort.

He says what he thinks.
What he thinks people want to hear.

I can’t think of a less talented front-bench politician, of either sex or any party.

What do Lib supporters think about her?

(I suppose she must have some talents. She did make it to deputy PM after all).

Julie bishop was still pushing the line of no evidence when the Israelis got caught using out passports to kill people

the passports in question were of people who no longer lived here changing their names multiple times – of course – they were ‘shocked” to find out they were used.

it makes me wonder why they really killed prisoner X, there’s a good possibility that the Israelis were looking to set up some kind of false flag event in Australia to get Australia fully behind the biblical prophecy. prisoner X from Australia might have baulked at this possibility and ended up condemned to death for not being on programme.

the Israelis were sniffing around new zealands power stations a while ago, probably seeing how easy it was to infiltrate the computer systems of these places

in the “art of war” sun Tzu points out its easier to bribe or simply put your man into a position of power than go to war with a country. you can put people into positions of power in other countries to harness their military to fight your war too, using their money, men and machines to face the onslaught of people you’ve never heard of before.

in the meantime

the war continues

Floating party balloons could soon be a thing of the past, with a world helium shortage sending prices soaring.

The shortage of the invisible, lighter-than-air and odourless substance has become serious enough for the US Senate to get involved – voting overnight to pump up production of the versatile product

I really love to taste her
(Every time we meet)

She’s all right,

She’s super-freaky, yow
Super freak, super freak

She’s a very special girl
(The kind of girl you want to know)
From her head down to her toenails
(Down to her feet, yeah)
And she’ll wait for me at backstage with her girlfriends
In a limousine

Julie Bishop’s time as a solicitor for asbestos miners is under the spotlight

In the 1980s, working under her married name Julie Gillon, Bishop was deeply involved in some of Slater & Gordon’s biggest asbestos cases.

Lawyer Peter Gordon told Australian Doctor magazine in 2007: “We had to fight even for the right of dying cancer victims to get a speedy trial. I recall sitting in the WA Supreme Court in an interlocutory hearing for the test cases involving Wittenoom miners Mr Peter Heys and Mr Tim Barrow. CSR was represented by Ms Julie Bishop (then Julie Gillon). (She) was rhetorically asking the court why workers should be entitled to jump court queues just because they were dying.”

Bishop denies that entirely. “Absolutely not. At all times I acted on the instructions of the firm’s clients, CSR Limited and the state government insurance office. I acted professionally and ethically. I utterly reject Peter Gordon’s version,” she said. “It would be appalling for someone to draw some moral equivalence between my role in the Wittenoom case and establishing a union slush fund.”

Robert Vojakovic of WA-based Asbestos Diseases Society says Bishop “had a take-no-prisoners approach”.

Of course, solicitors don’t choose their clients. But Stephen Jones thinks Labor should point out Bishop’s role. “You can’t judge anyone by their clients, I suppose. But she had some pretty dodgy ones in my view.”

I can dim the lights
And sing you songs full of sad things
We can do the tango just for two
I can serenade and gently play
On your heart strings
Be your Valentino just for you

Ooh love Ooh lover boy
What’re doing tonight hey boy
Set my alarm turn on my charm
That’s because I’m a good old fashioned lover boy

Ooh let me feel you heartbeat
(Grow faster faster)
Ooh can you feel my love heat
Come on and sit on my hot seat of love
And tell me how do you feel right after all
I’d like for you and I to go romancing
Say the word your wish is my command

Ooh love Ooh lover boy
What’re doing tonight hey boy
Write my letter feel much better
And use my fancy patter on the telephone

When I’m not with you
Think of you always I miss you
(I miss those long hot summer nights)
When I’m not with you
Think of me always I love you love you
Hey boy where did you get it from
Hey boy where did you go
I learned my passion
In the good old fashioned school of lover boys

The keyword here is blackwhite. Like so many Newspeak words, this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary. This demands a continuous alteration of the past, made possible by the system of thought which really embraces all the rest, and which is known in Newspeak as doublethink. Doublethink is basically the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.

FSA brigade ‘joins al-Qaeda group’ in Syria
Hundreds of fighters under Free Syrian Army’s command have pledged allegiance to al-Nusra Front, reports say.

Hundreds of fighters under the command of the opposition Free Syrian Army (FSA) have reportedly switched allegiance to al-Qaeda-aligned groups, in a move described as a huge blow to moderate rebel forces.

Activists and military sources have told Al Jazeera that the 11th Division – one of the biggest FSA brigades – has switched allegiance to the al-Nusra Front in Raqqah province, a border province with Turkey.

A video was uploaded to YouTube on Thursday purporting to show members of the 11th Division parading through Raqqah with Nusra fighters.
