Subject: Howling Gale has blown my broccoli away :-(

Hi there,

Well how happy was I to receive an email from veg gardener telling me that the “old” style forum was back in action :( Hello everyone :)

I am fighting a losing battle I fear. I have started a vegie garden, we have 6 beds and after I managed to get rid of the red spider mites my next adversary was the wind. See we now live on top of a hill and so when the westerlies get up…..so does anything that is not tied down! So my broccolli and caulies are trying to stay in the ground but they are struggling. All my mulch has blown away :-( I have put up shade cloth wind breaks but alas I don’t think even they can do enough when we have a gale. Might have to give up I think and try again when I have more protection. On a lighter note though, the rocket is loving the wind and the parsley and coriander are doing fine so it’s not all a total loss.

I planted a screen of bare rooted Manchurian Pears today. Hubbie went out and left me to my own devices so I went shopping. I bought 5 and liked how they looked and how they will look so much I think I will go out and get some more. The most cost effective way to get trees!

Hope you are all well & warm.

GG

good to see you greengrub.

How about using hay bales around your veges, two high to provide a “walled garden” effect. Would that be enough to protect your veges until you can grow a proper wind break?

yep – walled gardens are the go. doesn’t have to be straw – can be iron fences to the west and chicken wire elsewhere. A series of walled gardens with rotating chooks is my specialty. it reduces evaporation when your garden is sheltered and makes it more pleasant for humans, moths, bees and butterflies.
Also sheds, rainwater tanks, compost bins, wood sheds, clotheslines and even roses and fast growing melaleucas can be positioned on the west. just make sure that everything you build is able to withstand the wind.
