OK. I’m not sure what it is but sounds pretty serious. Could be some sort of fungal infection.

do this one last and make sure that you clean your pruning tools with metho or bleach between trees, so that you don’t pass the infection on.

depends how damaged the tree is. First I would get rid of the green ants and see if the tree heals itself. If not then I would rip it out. Either way you want to get rid of the ants.

I don’t know I have never had them. Do a search on green ants on the web. See if you can find any info on them. Hopefully you will find some information on how to control or eradicate them.

Are you sure they are the cause of the problem, and are not just there because of another problem? Like when you get ants on citrus trees it is usually because the tree has scale or aphids.

Hello Veg Gardener.

I am near sydney. I see your choko vines growing. I saved some of my chokos off the vine from last crop. I was expecting to plant them in spring. They have all well and truely sprouted. It is the middle of winter. Is it ok to plant next crop out now?

if all those aerial layers take you will have a lot of new trees there VG. I hope your purple plum takes and then you will have a new tree to replace the sick one. It can take about 6 months for the new roots to grow. If you wrap some black plastic around the layers it will keep it nice and dark for the roots and will make it easier to see if they have grown when you inspect it later.

That last plant is a lovely big Staghorn Fern :)

someone else might be able to tell you the best way, but as far as I know each leaf segment can be cut off and mounted on a board as a new plant. But why would you want to? It looks great as it is.

You can take new plants from an elkhorn but it’s not the same with a staghorn. Have a bit of a cyber search Veg before you do it.

Looks good. I’m so envious of everyone’s veggies. So far only my cabbages, silverbeet and beetroot are poking up. According to my diary I should have a few more bits of green by now.

Planted a bunch of stuff on 23/6. According to various books & the seed packets I should now be seeing cucumbers, beans, snow peas, peas, rockmelon, and broccoli – at the very least, as these are all 6 to 10 or 7 to 10 days (and today is day 10). And the silverbeet & beetroot are supposed to be 10 to 14 days – and they’re already up.

Guess plants don’t read the instructions on the seed packet.

How long should I give them before I decide they’re not going to grow? Twice the long end of the period given? That is; if the packet says 6 to 10, should I allow 20 days before I give up? I don’t want to plant too much by jumping the gun, but at the same time, I don’t want to have nothing growing too long.

I’d give them a bit longer Sue, sometimes they like to sleep in a bit :) If the temperature isn’t quite warm enough they can be slow.

snowpeas look good – high protein you know – good for putting on muscle.
no too sure about the brussel sprouts – is there a possibility they need more nitrogen?
i don’t have a bird of paradise – i might look into it – they grow here i think.
