I need some advice please.
Daughter is writing an essay on self-control and how to improve it.
she also needs to do a 1 week improvement study on herself.
she’s chosen swearing as the behaviour she wants to modify.
In order to quantify what exactly swearing is to her, she has written the words out in full.
Is that acceptable in a uni thing?

a) ask the person setting the assignment
b) asterisk the vowels to be safe

Is it an essay or a practical/report?

There’s a difference – a very big one.

I don’t know, but if it is not considered acceptable at a University the people making that decision should take a good fucking look at themselves.

In all these years it’s the first time I can remember you dropping the F bomb, Rev. :)

I would say yes.

She needs to define what is considered as swearing.

I would suggest that she recruits an impartial observer to collect data. The problem is, as a behaviour modification type thing, it’s flawed to begin with as the subject is aware of the experiment and the potential results.

Better still, recruit an unknowing subject so she can be the observer. The an unexpected whack with a big stick will have real and lasting results.

I think I’ve used it once or twice over the years, but certainly not a lot.

A bit strange really, since I’ve often worked in environments where most people use it every other word as a matter of course.

When I’m on a building site I use it as an adjective, adverb, noun and verb.

Good advice.
c) For a long essay list the words in a separate section rather than in the main body of the essay.

I absolutely agree it should be acceptable. I looked at swearing in both Sociology and Linguistics an participated in tutes that included words up to and including ‘cunt’.

Also sounds like standard fare for Criminology and Deviance subjects…

I would look at emotional intelligence as a way to improve self control

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_intelligence

intellectual intelligence is different to emotional intelligence

swearing is linked to ones emotions

if you are aware of your emotions you can more easily control them

control your emotions and you can control your swearing
