Gyro!
Well done Cackles :D
My first ever incubator. Am told it takes about 3 hatches to tweak the temperature controls, etc. Will candle eggs at about day 10 and report here. Only one of my Campbells is laying yet – hopefully the second will start soon. The Dark Campbells are apparently rare or non-existent in QLD. – mine came from eggs bought from Victoria.
looks complicated!
ok one of my hens has a white stripe of something on her comb i don’t know what it is they been in there pen all day just went out to feed them and noticed it.
ill try and take a photo tomorrow.

can someone please tell me what this white stuff its. i know its not paint.
I don’t know what it is Veg but a chook I had before the fox attack had something like that too. Didn’t seem to be a problem so unless the chook seems unhealthy in any way I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

I agree, if she starts to droop and hunch over… separate her. Keep her warm. Other wise she may have just popped her head somewhere the others haven’t.

Incubator update – took out the auto-turning egg rack about 1 am. Fingers and toes crossed – will know in a few days whether or not I have ducklings. None of the Campbell eggs were fertile and I’m not sure how many of the others (Mallards) are developing normally.
It has been damp underfoot here and one of the pullets is showing a bit of warning sign of coccidiosis – (mustard coloured, runnier than normal poo) so the chooks have Sulpha Quin in their water for a few days. I will have to leave it a bit longer as they sneaked out past me yesterday and of course found some un-medicated water.

Ditto here….. will have to dose mine as well.
Tomorrow the chooks will have fresh shredded paper for their nest boxes as I am shredding the paper collection on my desk.
Think I’ll add some worm wood to the nesting areas of the gangs sleeping areas. That wormwood is growing huge again….
Thanks, Lucky.:)
Yes, my wormwood is starting to grow again and I will be adding it to my nest boxes as well. My ducks have been laying since March but actually the egg numbers have dropped off in the last few days…
5 ducklings have hatched so far! Not sure if more to come or not…:D

ooh, exciting! hoping to hatch some ducklings this spring myself. Not as in me personally, but as in my ducks :D
i made a Netting for my chooks today, will try and take photos tomorrow.
Ducklings (5) are thriving and I am only half- sleeping to the accompaniment of a red glow and cheeping in the hallway just outside my bedroom. Red glow is from the desklamp heat source in their brooder which atm is a red plastic crate. Got up during the night and took out the food and water and added more dry bedding. This morning switched off the power to the unhatched eggs – and later when I pysch myself up and am sure eggs are definitely too cold for any signs of life will do a post mortem of them..
I think one of my Dark Campbell ducks, “Lizzie” might be broody! :) Tossing up whether to see if she is interested in rearing the ducklings or to put eggs under her if she really is broody…The Mallards seem to be going into a moult and have stopped laying. They seemed to think it was Spring in March and are a few months out of whack with the “breeding season”.
Lurv baby ducklings:D so cute.
chooks have a new run, they just want to sit in there house all day, wondering if i have to lock them up all night or if i could just lock them out of there house for a day.

Don’t be so impatient! They will venture out – eventually. You could entice them with a some treats – don’t they follow you? Chooks always take a bit of time to get used to changes – a week-10 days should do it…
