I was going through my old stuff today and I came across a camera I have owned for about 12 years, though it hasn’t seen the light of day for about 8 years. It is a Canon EOS 50 (analogue) film camera. It’s not top of the range, but at the time it was a high end amateur SLR. It is beautifully crafted, has a lovely heft, and the controls are intuitive and ergonomically excellent. It’s much larger and heavier than its DSLR equivalent, but is much more haptically pleasing.

What should I do with it? I can’t bring myself to trash it. Does it have any value to anyone?

Actually I also have about 3 obsolescent digital cameras. They all work fine and the optics are good, but they have been superseded in terms of image size and features – but mostly it’s just megapixels. I can’t bring myself to consign them to landfill.

Is there anything useful I can do with these cameras? I’d be happy to donate them to anyone who could use them.

Some enthusiasts still work with film cameras (heck, some go out of their way to use large format TLRs). Ask around camera clubs, hipster cafes, uni art departments, you might be able to still sell the SLR.

That’s what they did with most of the old rotary dial telephones, and now people are paying decent money for the survivors in working condition.

Where’s the fun in that? At least take them apart and have a good look at how it all works, or at the very least senselessly dash it into a thousand little pieces, then throw it out.

Put it on ebay, you could get a Clive Palmer and a Weather Girl going hammer and tongs for it.

There are still many people who like film, and like collecting exotic and old cameras. An EOS50, however, is neither of these. Too modern to be collectible, too basic to be desired, too plastic to be stylish.

I am sure you’d be able to find someone who’d take it off your hands, but it’s not going to make you rich.

I’ve got heaps of old cameras. Some are reasonably old. I’ve got one that was used in Tobruk in 1940. I’ve got the pictures too.

Anyone for the original box brownie?
