Subject: A baby for Casper and Dib

The cockateils Casper (mum) and Dib (dad) have successfully hatched a chick and it has survived the night. The kitty litter bedding seems to have done the trick in creating a more secure “nest” to hold the baby. I don’t expect the other eggs to hatch now as it is the end of the period I expected them to hatch but I will leave them another couple of days to be sure.

Congratulations are in order for Casper and Dib…also Nanna BlueGreen! The chick doesn’t look much just yet, does it?

there was a bit of a kerfuffle in the cockateil cage just now so I went to check on them. The baby was knocked out of the “nest” so I put it back and took the opportunity to remove and check the remaining eggs. As I suspected they were all clear so they have been disposed of. The baby is obviously getting well fed, I swear its belly is twice the size it was yesterday, and as round as a ball.

Good thing the “nest” is on the ground…sounds like it’s a survivor!

I am thinking of calling the baby Roly. It has two such attentive parents with all the food they need laid on it is so well fed that it is going to be a very roly poly baby!

28 days and Roly is almost fully feathered. We have a cuddle every evening so he gets used to being handled. He seems to enjoy the stroking and scratching.

I didn’t have anything to do with it, the birds did it all by themselves!

You at least worried about it.

I will advise though that these birds do need more room to move and that if they had that, they’d be interested in a proper nest.

I agree, but that is not something I can do about yet. The parent birds belong to my daughter and will one day go back to live with her, but Roly is mine! All mine! ha ha ha ha ha…..

Roly had his first flight last night. He got startled when I had him out and he took off. I was really surprised at how well he flew (although there were a few collisions). Spent more than a few minutes retrieving him from curtain rails, the top of book cases and finally down behind the couch.

You were lucky it was night. As they can get up enough speed in a few metres to break their bones on the glass window.

I only take him out at night, otherwise I close the curtains. I have kept birds before and know the risks of uncovered windows.

I know the risks of very clean windows for birdies…there were some Rainbow Lorikeets lined up today, that looked like they would like to come inside, and a couple even made exploratory trips to check out the plate glass doors…then they had a convo about it…but I digress…

Two weeks since the first one hatched, the second was three days later and the third five days. You can see what a difference a few days make. The parents are flat out keeping them fed.

I have been given a bigger cage. Once it is cleaned up I can use it for them.

I’ve got an aviary that really needs to go somewhere. In fact, I have the makings of three or four.

Quarrions can accelerate to 60kmph in 3 metres
