Subject: Peas

My peas are almost ready to pick. When I progressivly pick them I will want to freeze them unitl I get enough for a meal. Is it best to freeze them in their pods or should i open the peas and freeze them like that?

Are you planning to eat the pods? Are they Snowpeas? I would have to say pods don’t freeze well and if I have to freeze them,, would rather cook or at least blanch them first. Peas out of pods freeze well.

I don’t know the right answer for you gc but maybe just put them intact into the fridge until you get enough to blanch and freeze.

Thanks, No they are not snow peas. Should you always blanch them first before freezing? How long for?

remove the peas from the pod first if you are not planning the eat the pods. Otherwise you will hae to thaw them to pod them and they won’t handle well. Frozen peas are best cooked straight from the freezer.

If you are going to blanch them I would drop them in boiling water for only a couple of seconds. If you have a basket you can put them in first even better.
