http://www.bom.gov.au/NexGenFWS/

Metro forecast: 7-day fully worded forecasts will be provided for Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. In addition, rainfall probability and rainfall amount will also be included for the current day and the next day for Brisbane, Maroochydore and Surfers Paradise. Some of the metropolitan suburbs of Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast will also receive their own 7-day forecast précis.

I wonder what sorts of errors we can expect from the BOM now that they’re going to 7 day forecasts..

It would be interesting to see the deviation between forecast and actual temperatures, forecast from 1-7 days in advance.. I wonder how those deviations increase with time…

Wish Tofu was here ;(

There are a lot of middlemen now in the weather industry.
Take for example the ABC, they don’t get their weather off the BOM, they get it off a third party who buy it off the BOM and the sell it to the ABC, Channel 9 etc.
It’s the ugly side of Capitalism that creates a lot of un-needed costs and un-needed jobs in the name of efficiency, ironically.

OTOH, the little man can still influence the weather for the better. Just ask morrie.

Steve(Primus) seemed very confident in his assertions that anything beyond three days was near enough to fantasy.

Wonder what happened to him…?

Not sure where he went but I agree with his assertions.

Put this way. I read the BOM four day weather charts and the seven day forecasts offered by sites that draw their data from BOM. I have to use my discretion and reload the BOM pages once per day. The Seven day forecasts can change several times per day and still be incorrect in less than two days.

The BoM has progressively been adding the seven-day forecasts to it’s output for some time.

Melbourne has had them for the last year, at least.

How accurate are they? Dunno, I keep forgetting to keep track of them.

Some of those images I see on Aunty look like material from Weatherzone – especially the lighning strike stuff.

There’s one statement that is accurate.

The weather is changeable.

Weatherzone does the lightning strike stuff on contract.

Many years ago (fifteen years?) I tracked that for three weeks, just to see. Was presently surprised, but predictions back then beyond a week started to go awry. Software and computer speeds have increased enormously since then. It’d be worth doing the test again.

You’d imagine they keep these stats

Really? That’s the exact opposite of what used to be the case. It used to be the case that the weathermen on all the TV stations were directly employed not by the stations but by the BOM. Even back 15 or so years ago some newspapers would print forecasts out to longer than 7 days, to 10 or perhaps 14 days.
