If it wasn’t so serious it would be a joke. Crime can’t be stamped out but it can be contained. I cringed when I read a Vietnam Vets bikies’ clubhouse was raided.

My understanding is that the laws have been there all the time, but now the coppers are being directed to actively patrol them?

You can’t muck around with the judiciary: it bites back.

The consorting and loitering laws have been around since way back when we were at war.

They are new and they carry new penalties. imo they are fearful in their far-reaching implications for everyone, not just those who ride bikes and are not members of criminal gangs They will find ways around it and could (if wished) have been prosecuted under the old.
I’m with you bluegreen, though maybe for slightly different reasons.

Not least is that it gives the overzealous police a headset for this.

Ultimately it will breed contempt for the good cops (as long ago, before Fitzgerald) as well as these.

ON THE ORIGINS OF CONSORTING LAWS – University of Melbourne:http://www.law.unimelb.edu.au/files/dmfile/37_1_31.pdf

This article offers an historical analysis of consorting offences, placing them in the context
of a long line of statutes that criminalised the act of associating with undesirable classes of
people. It traces their emergence from the beginnings of English vagrancy legislation in the
late-mediaeval period, to early attempts in the Australasian colonies to suppress inchoate
criminality, and then to 20th century efforts to tackle organised criminal activities. What
emerges is that consorting offences are neither a modern phenomenon nor one restricted
to the antipodes.

I agree, jj. Jarrod Bleijie is the son of a peer of mine and his grandfather is an old friend and work colleague. However the family do have that taint of Dutch White supremacism which we often have seen in Dutch South Africans. His grandfather was born in Dutch Indonesia and suffered under the Japanese in a concentration camp as a child.
Though I think the real issue would be the police taking things too far, I do also think the law in Qld is too open for fascist type treatment of anyone who looks like a non- conformist.

Trust me, the police here have enough to do without counting bikies… I will have to ask P about the second part of that sentence as politics and social justice are his pet topics…

One of the reports to do with the new laws and which came in today.
From an ALP Branch; needs verifying.

“The new Qld non-association laws (bikie laws) were used to disperse drumming circles at Stradbroke Island beach after the “Island Vibe” music festival! People approaching the circles were told by police that they would face arrest if they congregated in groups of more than 20. Smaller groups were told to stop making music or face arrest for disturbing the peace. People approaching small groups (under 20 people) were told that if they refused to move on they would be arrested for failing to observe police directions. If police are willing to use the ‘bikie laws’ on peaceful festival goers, imagine how happy they will be to use them on CSG protests or other environmental and political rallies!! — with Mission Beach Information Station and 19 others.”

This is the sort of thing I was thinking of.
Cheers.

There is an official phone number where you can lodge any planed rides, but everyone I know refuses to use it.

I think in the not too distant future there will be a lot more Son’s of Anarchy t-shirts getting around. :)

The stories that I have heard of those who did notify the local police that there was going to be a ride, was that they still got pulled over. In one situation it was an escort for a funeral and the police took photos of the mourners.

Then there was the lady over 70 y o…as soon as she took her helmet off the copper basically said “sorry ma’am” and left her alone…

The coppers can only follow orders…I’m sure they’ve lots other genuine crimes they’d rather be investigating…

There are definitely genuine crimes and criminals they need to be working on and there are definitely police who would prefer to do that. There still exists the problem that some the police in general see us all as criminals.

and there are police who don’t agree with the new strategy but have been told if they don’t comply then they will lose their job.

The whole thing is stupidity. It’s typical of CN’s arrogance. VLAD (love the irony in that abbreviation) is bad legislation and widely open to abuse.

It could be argued quite reasonably that Asian or Middle eastern crime gangs conduct far wider ranging, and far higher turnover activities than bikies.

Why aren’t we seeing police parked outside Vietnamese takeaways or Kebab shops?

By choosing to focus on a small but visible group, they can claim to be doing something about crime while the reality is that most organised crime goes on as before. It’s also a great diversion. Hardly a peep was made when Qld MPs voted themselves an 8% payrise due to the noise the media was making about cops wasting their time outside tattoo shops.

I’ve got tattoos and a big bushy beard. My helmet is matte black. I can’t wait to get pulled over when I’m riding my 100cc Honda scooter to work :)

3 Definitions
In this Act—
association means any of the following—
(a) a corporation;
(b) an unincorporated association;
© a club or league;
  • any other group of 3 or more persons by whatever name called, whether associated formally or informally and whether the group is legal or illegal*

That’s right. They have to be in a group of three. Even the ladies at the CWA are included under this legislation.

They can, it’s just if Campbell and his cronies decide that they want to shut it down, they can. No crime needs to be committed and no evidence is needed.

Further to that, the Criminal Law Amendment (Public Interest Declarations) Amendment Bill 2013 allows for people to be detained without charge or evidence irrelevant of the judicial system.

I believe it’ll all eventually come tumbling down after high court challenges. When Campbell’s gone, we’ll be left with a mess that will take decades to recover from.
