I noticed the things at Bunnings today too. Didn’t bother looking at the price! Pity people think veg gardens have to take up a lot of space.
My pop had two racks of garden troughs. Pity I don’t have any photos cause I’ll probably mess up the explanation. He had lengths of concrete pipe, cut in half. About, ohhh, I guess 6, maybe 8 inch radius. He had them on a steel rack – one length at about knee height, one about midriff. He added a piece of board on either side of the pipe half to build it up to about 12 inches in total. He two racks (eg four pipes), about 3 metres long each. At one end, arched between the top two pipes he had a piece of mesh, about 1 metre wide. Aside from really big stuff – like cucubits, he grew all his veg in these two racks. Climbing stuff like beans and peas was planted near the mesh, so the fruit hung down over your head. Strawberries and hangers like cherry toms were planted in the bottom pipes. Roots and leaves were planted in the end away from the mesh.

A very rough drawing of the pipe from the end. Have to go through my old photos and see if I can find any of the set up. I’ve kept it in mind, ‘cause the same pipes and racks have been used for about 20 years, and since I have limited space anything that helps out is considered.
