how do you organise and get support for a boycott?
Don’t think there’s much we can do, purple, except wait for the Russians (and other eastern Europeans) to catch up with the First World. But like me you can boycott the TV coverage of the Russian winter Olympics, in February next year.
there has to be something…I need a think
Yep, bugger all you can do, Purps.
Just wondering, why pick on Russia? Compared to some regimes in the middle east cough islamic cough they’re almost a paradigm of virtue.
you’d think nailing your testicles to a frozen russian street would get more public attention. that guy must be pretty disgusted in everyone!

YEAH! It’s much, much worse than the previous government…oh…wait.
>I guess cos I think of Russia as being progressive and free.
Corruption is endemic in Russian politics and government, and probably seriously distorts whatever goes on there.
>Corruption in Russia is a significant problem that impacts the lives of Russia’s citizens. Russia is on the 133rd place out of 176 (tied with Comoros, Guyana, Honduras, Iran, and Kazakhstan) in the Corruption Perceptions Index published by Transparency International. According to some expert estimates, the market for corruption in the country exceeded US$240 billion in 2006. The Russian think tank Indem estimates that bribes accounted for 20% of Russia’s GDP as of 2005.
According to a poll conducted in early 2010, 15% of Russians reported to have paid a bribe in the past 12 months. The overall amount of bribes in the Russian economy during the last decade skyrocketed from $33 billion to more than $400 billion per year in Putin’s government, according to Georgy Satarov, former aide to Boris Yeltsin.

What is Russia’s crime? To have a few backward gay laws that do not outlaw homosexuality.
Russia recently stepped up to the plate and stopped the disgusting West from destroying yet another nation in Syria, Putin deserves the Nobel peace prize 100 times more than two faced Obama does.
Why is the West’s warmongering so acceptable, yet Russia’s domestic gay laws completely unacceptable? There’s no question which is the worst crime against humanity.

Doubtless there are some Russians who follow that thinking, but religious belief is not really very big in Russia. The previous Communist regime was officially atheist but extremely homophobic. The current situation is partly a reflection of traditional, backward Eastern European sexism and conservatism, and probably also influenced by church/state connivance in corruption and organised crime.

LGBT rights in Israel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) rights in Israel have advanced in recent years and have generally been seen as one of the most progressive countries in the Middle East and Asia. Same-sex sexual activity was legalized in 1988, although the law was not enforced after a 1963 court decision. Israel became the first in Asia to recognize unregistered cohabitation between same-sex couples, making it the only country in Asia to recognize any same-sex union thus far. Although same-sex marriages are not performed in the country, Israel recognizes same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, making it the first and only country in Asia to do so. Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation were prohibited in 1992. Same-sex couples are allowed to jointly adopt after a court decision in 2008, while previously allowing stepchild adoptions and limited co-guardianship rights for non-biological parents. Gays and lesbians are also allowed to serve openly in the military.
Recent polls have indicated that a majority of Israelis support same-sex marriage, despite some social conservatism. Tel Aviv has frequently been referred to by publishers as one of the most gay friendly cities in the world, infamous for its annual Pride Parade and gay beach, earning it the nickname “the gay capital of the Middle East” by Out Magazine. According to LGBT travelers, it was ranked as the best gay city in 2011, despite reports of some LGBT violence during the 2000s, which were criticized by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres. A monument dedicated to the LGBT victims persecuted by Nazis during World War II will be erected in Tel Aviv.

>Is this a reference to those two guys who ended up swinging in the breeze for raping a 13yo boy?
I don’t why you’ve chosen to fixate on that particular case, DO (two teenagers hanged for what was later reported to be the rape of another teenager). Thousands of gays have been executed in Iran since the revolution, and it’s also a regular policy in other muslim countries, especially if the victims are gay rights activists:
Homosexual relations are a crime in Saudi Arabia and Iran. The death penalty is currently in place in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Mauritania, northern Nigeria and Yemen.
The legal situation in the United Arab Emirates is that it is illegal and can get you the death penalty, but some regions just give jail time, mutilations, and fines. In Bahrain, homosexuality between two consenting adults aged 21 and above is legal. In Qatar, Algeria, Uzbekistan and the Maldives, homosexuality is punished with jail time or fines. This has led to controversy regarding Qatar, which is due to stage the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Human rights groups have questioned the awarding in 2010 of the right to host the competition, due to the possibility that gay football fans may be jailed. In response, Sepp Blatter, head of FIFA, joked that they would have to “refrain from sexual activity” while in Qatar. He later withdrew the remarks after condemnation from rights groups.
In Saudi Arabia, while the maximum punishment for homosexual acts is public execution, the government will generally use lesser punishments—e.g., fines, jail time, and whipping—as alternatives, unless it feels that individuals are challenging state authority by engaging in LGBT social movements. Iran is perhaps the nation to execute the largest number of its citizens for homosexual acts. Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, the Iranian government has executed more than 4,000 such people.
In Egypt, openly gay men have been prosecuted under general public morality laws. (See Cairo 52.) On the other hand, homosexuality, while not legal, is tolerated in Lebanon.

Fair enough, as you were. :)
Australia will become just as boned but you’ve got to stay to try and stay ahead of the bow wave of the destruction of western civilisation.
The Cave of the Patriarchs massacre, also known as the Hebron massacre was a shooting attack carried out by American-born Israeli Baruch Goldstein, a member of the far-right Israeli Kach movement, who opened fire on unarmed Palestinian Muslims praying inside the Ibrahim Mosque (or Mosque of Abraham) at the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, West Bank. It took place on February 25, 1994, during the overlapping religious holidays of Purim and Ramadan. The attack left 29 male worshippers dead and 125 wounded. The attack only ended after Goldstein had expended his ammunition, when he was overcome and beaten to death by survivors.
The attack set off riots and protests throughout the West Bank, and 19 Palestinians were killed by the Israeli Defense Forces within 48 hours of the massacre. Goldstein was widely denounced in Israel and by Jewish communities in the diaspora, with many attributing his act to insanity. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin condemned the attack, describing Goldstein as a “degenerate murderer”, “a shame on Zionism and an embarrassment to Judaism”. Some Jewish settlers in Hebron laud him as a hero and view his attack and subsequent death as an act of martyrdom.

Interesting that you should mention paedophiles on a thread about homosexuality. I was recently reading a book about the history of homosexuality in art that covered the whole time-span of recorded art. Throughout the ages and in every country, up until very recent times, no distinction was made between homosexuality, paedophilia and cross-dressing. It was a shock to me that the political lobby for the granting of rights for homosexuals was paralleled in time by an equivalent political lobby for the granting of equivalent rights to paedophiles.
As for what to do about Russia, first look up the Lonely Planet guidebook of Russia to see what they suggest for homosexual tourists.
