Subject: Apostrophe & Quotation Mark Trouble

I mentioned this in Chat the other day but I don’t think anyone responded. On this new computer running Windows 8, I often have trouble typing apostrophes and quotation marks. They either don’t appear unless I follow them with a space, or the quotation mark appears when I’ve typed an apostrophe, or an umlaut or other foreign accent appears on the following letter. Or, sometimes they work properly. Anyone know what’s going on and what I can do about it?

I don’t know anything about Win8, Bubblecar, but it sounds like you keyboard is configured to use multi-key input. Is there a region setting you can adjust?

It’s actually the same keyboard I used on the old computer (because it’s a Logitech one of better quality than the one which came with the new one) so presumably if anything needs adjusting it’ll be in Windows somewhere. Can’t see anything relevant in Control Panel, Keyboard.

I don’t remember choosing any country or region for the keyboard, or being offered that option. Where can I change such things?

This pooter is set to English (Australia) in Region in Control Panel.

If you’ve got a touch screen, swipe in from the right. Under ‘setting’ you will find the keyboard. Check that it is set to English (Australia) US Keyboard.

“Testing”, let’s see, ‘cos I just adjusted “something”

Seems to work now :)

I changed “input” from English International to English US and that seems to have fixed the problem.

I don’t have a touch screen (I hate the things) but I just moused over the language icon at bottom right next to the time, and it tells you how to change “input”.

Americans believe that Foreigners use weird symbols in a random fashion. Just look at the gobbledegook that they write. So they have provided a keyboard that does it automatically.

Unfortunately every time I reboot, I have to change the input setting back to ENG US from ENG INT. Presumably there’s something I can click somewhere to set it as the default, but these things are not easy to find, especially in Win8.

No I’m using Win8 modified with software called Classic Shell, which bypasses the yucky Win8 Start Screen and allows it to function like earlier versions of Windows with a proper desktop and Start menu etc.

There is, but all I know about it is that it employs a Start button. I don’t know if it addresses other concerns.

There is, as Windows keeps reminding me. But according to the experts it doesn’t really fix the problems.

With a bit of luck by the time we get to Win 9 the geniuses who run MS marketing will realise that people who have computers with a large non-touch screen don’t actually want their OS to be set up the same as people with a small touch screen.

A bloke ran me through it recently & it seems to address some but not all of the Win 8 issues.
One clue he gave me is to run your cursor off the right hand top corner of the screen to bring up the hidden buttons more easily than trying to position the cursor mm perfect. This also works with Win 8.

Let’s hope so. I almost get the impression that MS deliberately stuffed this one up in order to keep the “every second Windows is crap” tradition going.

Talking of which, I subscribed $10/month for the perpetually updating version of Office a few months ago, and now I get a paper invoice delivered from somewhere in SE Asia, once a month.

I’m surprised it’s not written out by hand.

I agree Morrie. I am on satellite also & cloud computing would not be practical. Looks like I’m stuck with XP for a while longer.
