Subject: Snails in my worm farm

A few years ago I combined someone else’s worm farm with my own. It wasn’t long before I was aware of lots of tiny ,long, thin snails in it. They seem to have been co-habitating quite well but the snail population is expanding. I have removed some but there are lots left. Does this sound like a problem?

hi crinkle, For myself ….yes the snails are a problem. Here is how I see it…

#snails are not what is meant to be growing in the farm #snails are a pain in the arse when it comes to gardens #snails need to go.

So what I’d do is the following……

With the feed tray that all the food is being dumped into…..tip it onto a table (not in the sun) and sort through it and remove snails, food and crap until only worms are left on the table……or pick through it all in little piles and remove worms.

Do the same with the other trays….. then start the worm farm off fresh with a coca coir soaked in water for their bedding…….

Sound too hard???? Not really…done this a few times in my 9 years worm farming…when ants had raided a farm. Not hard…just time consuming.

Then pick out as many snails as you can and add the worm farm contents to your garden….. cover it though with soil as the sun will leach out the goodness from the worm castings.

Snail either feed to chooks or bin and removed on garbage day.

Hope this helps.:)

Any questions???? Just as away.

Thanks Lucky1. I will try to remove as many snails as possille but they are very tiny … about 5mm long. Actually having thought about that I think most of them are on the surface which will make the job easier. I will keep you posted.

as far as worm farms are concerned, snails are only really of nuisance value. they like the same moist conditions, and do no harm to the worms.

Less space for worms to breed in and less food for the worms to feed on too.

There is also a vast increase in the number of slaters. Do I need to adjust something eg add more lime?
