Just been listening to Rafael Epstein’s ABC drive show in beautiful Melbourne – centre of the universe. One guest was from Oxford dictionary in Australia and they were discussing the word ‘selfie’ being the international word of the year for 2013.

She then went on to advise that the first known world reference to the word ‘selfie’ was found on Dr Karl’s Self Service Science forum in 2002. Apparently an unnamed member used the term in a post to describe taking a photo of oneself whilst intoxicated!

I larfed and larfed and larfed.

Now, to find the out which person amongst us is the world leading trendsetter for 2013…

Internet can be such a fleeting medium. Servers get taken down or upgraded, old stuff gets deleted. It was probably in use long before 2002, but this was the oldest record they could still find of it.

One thing is for sure: if this is the first selfie, it was not posted with the goal of garnering ‘likes’.

The conditions we agreed to when we signed up over there included a clause that, while we retained copyright on anything we posted there, we also granted them a non-exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free right to use it for anything. What it means is that the abc is happy enough to take the responsibility and has done for a bloody long time since Dr Karl removed himself.

The triple J thing was via a contact I have on the inside who asked if I’d come on.

The ABC news people got my number because I gave it to them. I clicked on the link that said “Are you Hopey” before I realised how big of a thing it was; I thought that was the only article on it, I didn’t realise that my beautiful face was all over pretty much every english-speaking news website in the world.

And some clever fellow used the (dead) url of the image to try and track me down via my uni. But noooo.

There’s only been one forumer I’ve met IRL that I didn’t get along so well with. The rest of youse are awesome.

It was something I mentioned at Geoff’s funeral: it’s a real testament to both the forum and the people on it that we go out of our way to continue the relationships formed on here (or at least, the original SSSF). We’ve formed other forums in the wake of SSSF’s demise and we still have puds with great turnouts whenever someone is visiting from another city.

No money my arse, they have got moderators a plenty when it comes to political stories, it seems that politics is all the ABC is interested in when it comes down to it.

He said he was hoping for world peace and that he’d like to do something for handicapped children.

About 15 years ago my nieces and nephews used to used the word “versing” for “playing against” at our squash club with “I’m versing so and so” or “who are you versing?”

After hearing it a few times I thought it was quite an apt word which articulated what they were doing probably better than the correct alternatives.

NZ is a different place to Australia. Much of Australia differs as well in local dialect.
