To be fair, England are fielding a very strong team and I think you’d have to be a brave man to drop a C note on the Aussies to win. I fact I’d say the odds are less than an ALP victory at the last election – and you would have been crazy to bet on them.

except they haven’t… of the 67 series that have been played, both teams have won 31 times and drawn 5 times
there’s still too many blokes names Watson in the Australian squad. I reckon we could afford to drop one of them.

“lower likelihood of dying from any cause”
So people who eat nuts are less likely to be murdered or hit by a falling piano, or be involved in serious traffic accidents etc:
Nuts linked to lower death risk
A handful of nuts per day was linked to a 20 per cent lower likelihood of dying from any cause in the next three decades, 29 per cent lower risk of death from heart disease and 11 per cent lower chance of death from cancer. Photo: ALAMY
Eating an ounce (28g) of nuts each day could significantly reduce the risk of dying from a host of conditions including heart disease and cancer, scientists have claimed.
A study of almost 120,000 men and women in America found that the more nuts they ate, the lower their risk of dying over the next 30 years.
A handful of nuts per day was linked to a 20 per cent lower likelihood of dying from any cause in the next three decades, 29 per cent lower risk of death from heart disease and 11 per cent lower chance of death from cancer.
People who ate more nuts tended to be slimmer than those who avoided them, were less likely to smoke and more likely to have healthy habits such as exercising, taking vitamin supplements and eating fruits and vegetables.
But researchers insisted that even after these factors and their likely impact on death rates were taken into account, nuts still appeared to offer their own benefit.

We should drop all the batsmen, send in a wicketkeeper and 9 bowlers, that’s where all the batting is happening and if we double the bowlers, we might be able to contain the poms.

Prediction for the rest of the test…
Australia to be all out for about 300. England to bat slowly and patiently for 2 days to post a total around the 500 mark. Australia to be struggling to make England bat a second time, maybe setting them a target of about 50. England to win by lunch on day 5.

I reckon that our last 5 wickets will go close to matching our first five in this series.

From an Australian perspextive 300 it a competitive total given the less than perfect start.
For England, well they got early wickets but struggled to clean up the tail, they’ll be disappointed with that.

From the BBC.
“The first change of bowling, Peter Siddle replacing Johnson. Siddle, the tree-cutter, took a hat-trick in Brisbane on the first day three years ago. Collar upturned, sweatband on his arm, Siddle is full, almost persuading Carberry to offer a return catch. Question. Why did Siddle cover his face in zinc in England, yet eschews the war paint in Australia? The Brisbane sun surely requires more protection than the Manchester rain?”

I’ve seen Dexter play, I saw him make 99 only to be bowled around his legs by Ritchie Benaud.

I am not of the view that Watto is too good to leave out, even if he DOES bowl.
My squeeze Martin B posts:
Two centuries and thirteen half centuries in the last 76 innings by an Australian number three; 33 times dismissed in the first five overs.
Well the internet has a film clip of McKenzie bowling Dexter for 99, I’d say it has either been tampered with or my memory is failing.

So Australians have remembered how to play cricket? Jolly good.
I wish I had tickets for tomorrow – but the funds are too low, and I am going to a concert tomorrow afternoon. But the TV will get a workout until I leave for the concert.

Doffs hat at Boof
I just thought of a great play on word joke, you’ll love it.
England’s having a bad trot.
ROFPMSL
It’s brilliant.
What it does is play on the word trot but you see England’s best batsman is called Trott and he’s not going well.
And I’ve brought it all together with the old saying “Having a bad trot” which means things haven’t been going well lately.
So everything fits except the extra t but you can get around that with comedic license.
So there you have it England’s having a bad trot™

I teach my side that good sportsperson conduct is the most important aspect of the game. Cheering on the opponents when they smack you for four or six, and congratulating them if they bowl you is the way to play the game. They seem to be getting beter and better at it.

Michael Clarke has been fined a portion of his match fee for telling an opposition player to expect a broken fucking arm.
Talk-back radio here this morning, the general consensus was that Clarke got the order of words wrong, should have been a fucking broken arm, and therefore made himself look like a blow-hard knobber.

Unjustly accused.
He may have been giving batting coaching lessons & was pointing out that playing that type of shot could result in either a broken arm or a very painful blow to the batsman’s box.

“Shane Warne says a threat by Jimmy Anderson to punch debutant George Bailey sparked the furious reaction by Australian skipper Michael Clarke in the first Test against England.
Clarke was fined 20 per cent of his match fee after being caught by a stump microphone telling the fast bowler to expect a broken arm in the final stages of Australia’s 381-run victory in Brisbane on Sunday.”

Channel Nine on Tuesday apologised that the Clarke comment was broadcast. Under an agreement between Cricket Australia and the television network, the stump mike is not supposed to be on between balls so his threat should not have been recorded.

He got fined 3k I think which would make his match payment 15k, not bad for 5 days work.
I guess my point is that:
1.) There is an agreement between the broadcaster and Cricket Australia that the stump mike is not on between balls
and
2.) Anderson threatened the bowler with physical violence – so the Australian Captain upped the ante in the war of words
Why the fine?
Was Clarke represented, and if so, was this evidence put?
If not put, shouldn’t the case be re-heard?

In a sense, Shane Warne has made a further breach of the policy by leaking details of what Anderson said to Bailey.

Because Australian sporting officials are spineless & never protect the sportspeople.
This goes at least as far back as Dawn Frazer’s suspension.

This is what happens to a team that takes notice of sports psychologists.
They look for positives to take out of a thrashing and in so doing are numbed to reality.

I’ve been listening to the BBC podcast at the end of the day’s play with Aggers and Boycott. When England have had a bad day Boycott gets a bit grumpy. It’s great listening.
What a time to go shopping.
I’ve missed all the fun.
Well, that was something really special.
Pass that chilli for this stick..
Rogers out for 2.
AUS: 1/4.
Watson out for a duck.
AUS: 2/4.
I disagree with the decision not to enforce the follow on.
By batting again we now have to bat England out of the game which will probably only end up giving us one and a half days to bowl England out again.
That should be plenty of time but it does give them the sniff of a draw, we don’t want to come away from Adelaide still only one up.
Remember they only have to fluke a win in one of the next three tests to retain the Ashes.

I didn’t know they were two down when I posted this, it still applies only more so now.
Agree. Would have liked to see the follow-on enforced.

Vitaï Lampada
There’s a breathless hush in the Close to-night —
Ten to make and the match to win —
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play and the last man in.
And it’s not for the sake of a ribboned coat,
Or the selfish hope of a season’s fame,
But his Captain’s hand on his shoulder smote
“Play up! play up! and play the game!”
The sand of the desert is sodden red, —
Red with the wreck of a square that broke; —
The Gatling’s jammed and the colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,
And England’s far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of schoolboy rallies the ranks,
“Play up! play up! and play the game!”
This is the word that year by year
While in her place the School is set
Every one of her sons must hear,
And none that hears it dare forget.
This they all with a joyful mind
Bear through life like a torch in flame,
And falling fling to the host behind —
“Play up! play up! and play the game!”
Sir Henry Newbolt

Wasn’t expecting Australia to win two matches out of the five, let alone the first two. Mitchell Johnson has been the difference between the two sides, he has destroyed England’s first innings in each of the first two matches.

Was nice to see the other bowlers get a few, even if it was the second innings.. relying on one bowler is dangerous

and the last two ashes series it has been Jimmy Anderson for England that has played that role.

Can’t ever expect more than a strike bowler has to give.. This is the captain’s ob to spell and play his bowlers according to the requirements of the game.
