I have had to put some rat bait in the shed. The vegie garden is next to the shed. The rat bait has done it’s thing and I have spent the morning ‘playing’ in the vegie garden accompanied by the odoriferous melody of decomposting rat. The ‘quality controllers’ have been very interested in the smell and I will have to keep a very close eye on them. Phew what a pong !!

Problem is there is a pile of ‘stuff’ at the back of the shed and I will have to work my way through it. I have visions of more than one rat still being alive and them going everywhere. I think I will just be a woos for a few more days, put up with the stink and then look for corpses.

We had rats nest under our bathtub. We discovered them about the same time I joined the GA forum last time. Eventually got rid of them, but whew there were some unpleasant days in between. The stoopid builders cut a bit square in the floor for the bath drain (which is, naturally, round) and never filled in around the drain. They were obviously there before we moved in, so I don’t know why the previous owner didn’t deal with it. Yucko.

Having got rid of them, I’m hoping my plants have better luck this time round. Some of you might remember (or not) me complaining that something was eating my cucumbers. The consenus at the time was that it was most likely rats.

I am having to enclose my vegie garden to keep the rats amongst other things out. It is SOOO disappointing to watch something growing nicely and then to look one morning and find it gone or bitten. I had a watermelon coming on well last year and one morning found it had been eaten out – totally hollow :((

Yuk… I have stopped calling now. He is all yours. I will just put up with stink of the rats rather than the stink of ‘Sandy au cow poo’.

Found my own stink today. I was planting out my new strawberries. The laundry tub they’re in had dirt in it; but I want to mix in some left over cow poo, so I dug it out into the wheelbarrow. Down the bottom is was really quite wet (the drain still had a lint guard so clogged up easily; I fixed the problem).

I kept getting whiff of ‘off’. At first I thought it was the cow poo from the no-dig. Then I was worried it was the dirt gone sore because of the wet. While I was looking for something to break out the link trap I moved a bit further around and notice ‘the bucket’.

Oh boy. The remains of a bird, maybe a pigeon, and about a bijillion maggots were floating in about 4 inches of water. My best guess is the bird, already dead, was dropped by a crow or the like from the overhanging tree. The water is from last weeks rain. The bucket’s in an out of the way spot, and although every now and then recently I’ve caught a whiff of something, we never noticed the bucket. Its been there a while ‘cause there was just a carcass.

NOW, just how DUMB are our chooks? Hubby took the bucket and tipped the bijillion maggots into the chook pen. They weren’t interested! I bet every crow, magpie and kookaburra in a 20 mile radius ended up in our backyard this afternoon; but our chooks took no notice at all.
