On some food products there is a graphic, 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm consisting of 3 squares in upper left, upper right and lower left, and the rest of the graphic is filled in with black or white pixels. It looks like some sort of computer readable code, does anyone know what it it’s for ? It’s separate from the barcode. I’m looking at a can of Australian Tomatos, and it’s printed on the bottom of the can.

It’s a QR code and can be read by your smart phone. Might contain recipes, further info on ingredients etc.

You can store recipes on computers.

Its like a barcode, but it works in two dimensions, allowing much more information to be stored. They are intended to be read by smart phones and usually contain enough information to direct the user to the website – if you want additional product information.

I have discovered two QR codes hidden in an urban treasure hunt (like Geocaches), and followed them here: www.munzee.com There are thousands around Perth.

QR codes are also being used by school librarians so that kids can use their tablet computers to connect to links about book reviews, and other info related to the book.
