Couple of nice days in the Perth sun for the poms.

0/0 That was the closest the Poms were going to come to being in front, it is all downhill from here for them.

I don’t like that sort of talk, it’s tempting fate.
I see Billy Bowden has been elevated back to the first grade of umpires, you can do that now with just handing over cash to the Indian Cricket Board that now run international cricket.
I mean Billy’s probably a nice chap but they dropped him because he was f’ing hopeless, a deaf cripple who is learning brail.
We need some scientifical tests re the effect of sun on Poms. Boris, I suggest that you go and stand in the sun for a couple of hours, then report back.
was the reason i gave up outdoor cricket. got to old and sensible to stand in the sun chasing a ball.
Well, that is appalling play in a Test.

Interesting that both Clark and Cook are playing their 100th test.
From memory there have only been two Tests in which two or more players have appeared in their 100th Test: Michael Atherton and Alec Stewart for England against West Indies in 2000, and Jacques Kallis, Shaun Pollock and Stephen Fleming in the match between South Africa and New Zealand in 2006., I think that’s right, I’ll check to make sure later.

It’s a Christmas miracle.
Aussies are playing well. But, they now have Johnson bowling again. He’s been outstanding.

Mostly the latter I think. The Aussies have improved a bit. I no longer use the term Smith the Unworthy for example. I think Smith is now worthy. Ditto Johnson and Warner.

The idea that they had ‘planned to meet’ a lesser team is difficult to understand – Are you suggesting they could play better if they prepared for a better team? Seems like a difficult sort of argument to mount.

Boof did return morale to the team and England underestimated their foe.

Yes. They as we do, have a range of players to select from. The problem was more that they didn’t try and change things about a bit. This could have made all the difference.
Tis so good to have the Pommies (you know who you are) eating a shit sandwich for breakfast. ;)
Losing Trott couldn’t have helped England but at the same time, they could have left him at home and replaced him before they started out. His problems were documented.

Amidst all the mania that was going on in the last few overs, I have forgotten the fact that Bailey has just equalled the record for the most runs scored in an over – which stands at 28 set by Brian Charles Lara against Robbie Peterson. Apologies for missing out on that, but there were lots of things happening and I couldn’t seem to remember that. Anway with that done, let’s take a look at what England have in front of them

That would be 32. Change a six to a hard run two.
sorry 3 sixes and 2 fours and a 2
86.6 J Anderson to Bailey, SIX, and with that six, Australia have declared. Clarke has seen enough and in his own inimitable style, whistles and calls the batsmen in. The last six was a monster hit as well, pitched up on the stumps, Bailey just drilled that flat and hard over long-on, it goes a long way and falls on the white cloth. As soon as Bailey smashed that six, Clarke called them in – 28 off that Anderson over too
86.5 J Anderson to Bailey, SIX, that is a mishit folks! A mishit and it has crossed the ropes at long-off, the fielder thought he had a chance, but the ball kept sailing over his head
86.4 J Anderson to Bailey, FOUR, now Bailey is getting into the act, swung away across the line and beats deep backward square leg, the man just had a few paces to move to his left, but couldn’t get there
86.3 J Anderson to Bailey, 2 runs, flicked away to backward square leg, just a couple of runs this time
86.2 J Anderson to Bailey, SIX, Boink! Bailey has nailed that. Absolutely nailed it. Half volley on the stumps, Bailey clears his left-leg slightly and lofts hard and straight down the ground, Clarke and Co. like it, they love it in fact. That was a 105 metre hit. Bounces off the concrete
86.1 J Anderson to Bailey, FOUR, the width was there and the bounce too to play that kind of a stroke – short and bouncing outside off, Bailey just upper-dabs it well over Cook’s head at slip, races away to the third man fence

A hammering. A battering. A shellacking. A pummelling. A dismantling. A dismembering. A destruction. A thrashing. A drubbing. A trouncing. A rout. An annihilation.
That’s how the last session was just described in The Guardian
How the hell did I let myself get talked into having a 5 hour meeting that started at 10.

Without any doubt. I only heard it on the radio and I had lots of giggles about how England couldn’t win a trick and the Aussies were walking on their grave.

Will certainly dent our confidence, given that Johnson has not been ‘unaplayable’ this test at all – on perhaps the most pace friendly wicket going around in world cricket today.
over to you Richie.
The WACA Ground may never again host a Test match, with Cricket Australia and the International Cricket Council united in their belief the venue no longer meets international standards.
The blow the venue received in September – it was excluded from next summer’s four-match series against India – is set to be compounded by warnings from administrators that Tests, and possibly limited-over matches, could be shifted interstate out of exasperation at the Western Australian Cricket Association’s long-stalled attempts to fund a major redevelopment of the ground.
Despite Channel Nine’s enthusiasm for Test matches in Perth, due to the favourable timeslot for eastern states viewers, and the wish of Indian authorities for a Test in Perth, CA left it off the list of hosts, primarily due to its poor facilities.
CA, which is led by former WACA vice-president Wally Edwards, justified its decision on the basis the WACA Ground had the smallest capacity of venues in contention to host matches and it was in need of “significant improvements”.

CA and the ICC, in Perth for the third Test, are poised to deliver an adverse review of the venue. It is believed their chief concerns relate to spectator comfort and safety, such as the often cramped walkways and the necessity for fans to queue for taps and toilets in sweltering temperatures.
The $500 million plan that had been in train for almost seven years was officially shelved late on Monday by the WACA.

They will pay the price for their lack of vision…
Kind of stupid spending all that money on a cricket ground and then someone else building a bigger stadium down the road…
Take a look at the Adelaide Oval.. redeveloped up the yang, but it still retains a feel of the old ..
And if you build it, they will come… haven’t the two big football teams taken up residence there also?

Pre-GFC it looked like a monster plan, which should have begun construction in 2011 in time for today’s test match. Now it’s all gone to pot.
They need two grounds, one smallish ground of about 5,000 seats for domestic cricket, one large stadium for tests, ODIs and domestic T20. The WACA ground itself was always going to be somewhere in the middle, too small for the big matches and too big for the Sheffield Shield stuff. They need to sell off the WACA and spend the money building a new base over the river somewhere within the new stadium precinct.

What a sweet, sweet victory after three thrashings from the poms.
Special mention to the comeback kids.
Brad Haddin: 36yo, Brilliant keeping and batting. Best form of his career.
Mitchell Johnson, 32yo, dropped early this year for homework issues, now probably the best fast bowler in the world.
Ryan Harris 34yo, Amazing consistency at the highest level. Would have got more wickets if he didn’t bowl so well.
Johnson wasn’t the deciding factor in this test at all.

David Warner – once he stops punching people at nightclubs and concentrates in his batting he is ok.
Steve Smith – or Smith the Worthy as I now call him.
Nathan Lyon – he isn’t a weapon likme Warne, but he’s a far better bowler than people give him credit for. Please can we stop dumping him from the side at the drop of a hat whenever there is some 19-year old spinner that bowls one great ball to take a wicket.

Check Lyons bowling figures this series against Swann (song).
Lyon would be in the thirties while I think Swann is up in the nineties.

Plus really shit discipline and fielding from the poms
Dropbear said:

No. But he can dry up the runs from one end and let the quicks go at them from the other. Or if the quicks have them tied down at the other end he can get wickets when batsmen target him.

Yes. it was a test that the poms lost. The couldn’t capitalise on Stokes work.
I haven’t checked the scorecard to see how many byes or wides were in the sum of the England total but I recall they were 3 for 22 or something and only 13 were off the bat.

I just really wish we could move the cricket to the new stadium when it is built. it’s only over the river and maybe 800m along – so it should get the same breeze and the same climate to produce a similar pitch. Be so nice if ordinary patrons could get a seat in the shade.

It is what is under the pitch that makes the big difference.
the other great factor – the Kookaburra ball doesn’t swing much – which negates the strength of the English attach. The pitches so far haven’t spun much, which takes much away from Swann’s strengths.

Yes, but they could source the clay from the same place as they do now. It comes from a place about 200 km south of Perth.

Not really an excuse. England has played with the kookaburra rock on Australian pitches enough times to know what they are doing. No. The problem is more complacency. They thought they were the favourites to win and couldn’t deal with the grief.

Wrong. It the same pitch Lyon bowls on as Swann.
As for the Duke/ Kookaburra swing thing, in Oz the wicket gets hotter and negates the swing. It will swing early when cooler and if it is cloudy, once it gets hot there is too much turbulent air coming off the pitch for swing to work..

Harvey.
Yeah. The property used to be owned by the family of the head curator of the 1960s or 710s, but eventually it was sold. In the late 1990s or early 2000s they went back there and asked the new owner for a deal on sourcing clay. He was only too happy to oblige. I understand some club cricket grounds also source their clay from there.

Lyon doesn’t spin it any more than Swann, but he has better flight, and his captain sets better field placings.
