Subject: nuclear safe habitat
I’ve just re-read Neville Shute’s On The Beach. There has been a catastrophic nuclear war and human life has been obliterated from the entire northern hemisphere as a result of radiation poisoning. The atmospheric radiation is inexorably spreading and is now progressing southwards through Australia, where only the southern cities still survived. Most of the novel takes place in Melbourne, where people have only a few months before they are contaminated by the lethal nuclear fallout. The population seem remarkably calm and resigned.
Question: would it be possible to construct a nuclear-safe habitat? Can air be decontaminated of radioactivity?

A: Yes. Yes.
But if the nuclear winter theory is correct your troubles are just beginning.

you filter out the radioactive particulate matter

Filter. After the blast the contamination is in solid form.

If they’ve got months to spare and whole cities full of supplies, it should be possible to build effective shelters.

Really? You don’t have random alpha and beta particles and whatever, still flying around?

These come from the decaying particulate matter. Keep the matter out and you keep them out…

What is going on here? There hasn’t been a response from Wookie as yet; quite uncharacteristic of them.

I’m bit confused. Is the decaying particulate matter uranium, plutonium etc, or is it partculates such as pollen, dust motes and carbon particulates that have somehow become emitters?
If the former, what would be their size approximately, and what level of filter would be required to keep them out? Would the normal particulate masks used in industry be sufficient?

If I was going to have myself a little conspiracy(were I one in the inner circles that is), it would be to invent mass blissifying devices to covertly blissify entire populations. You could just get on with it then…..

I know the hipster look, but I reckon the heavy glasses is going now into the mainstream, the hipsters will have to look for another look to remain hip.
