Hi all, I went to the big B yesterday and noticed Mr Fothergill has started an heirloom range of seeds. Has this been happening for a while and has just hit Darwin or is it really new? It says on the back of the pack ‘(Seeds grown and preserved as part of their heirloom range by The Diggers Club)’

I bought a pack of Capsicum Seven Colours. I noticed they also had tomatoes but didn’t see any others. There were a few empty spaces on the shelves so not sure whether or not there are more. It seems like a good idea to me as so many people are not interested enough to seek out heirloom seeds but if they are there for the choosing they may buy them.

Diggers Club has been selling seedling through the B shop for a couple of years now, so the seed range may have started then too. Can’t say I’ve noticed myself as I rarely look at the seeds at B, I buy mine direct from Diggers.

Morning, Thanks all. I usually just past my eyes over the seeds just to see what they are doing and the heirloom ones caught my eye. Time will tell as to whether the capsicum seeds prove to be good or not. Capsicum are one of the few things that can grow all year round here.
I actually went to the B shop to look for agricultural oil as spoken about by either Jerry or Pete the other week on GA – for making white oil. B shop didn’t have any. Does anyone know whether you can just use cooking oil instead?

Blend together 2 cups of vegetable oil and 1/2 cup of dishwashing liquid.
Use at the rate of 1tablespoon of the above mix to 1L of water.
I bought the cheapest canola oil, mixed this up , it went really thick ! stored in a jar in the shed.

The oil Jerry used was a cooking oil. Maybe sunflower? He mentioned that he uses the particular type because it can’t be GM’ed. Don’t know enough about GM to know if sunflowers are being mutated by crazy humans. Unlikely to have been canola, since that’s been GM’ed.

Hi BlueGreen, Veg Gardener….how’s it going?
I haven’t been to the forum for ages again… have been to-ing and fro-ing with work between the big smoke and here…sure throws the routine out…
Sonny Jim has mended one split in the pipe from the mains…one more to go…the pipe is about a metre down and nobody knows just where after that…sometimes it is almost under our (dirt) road…
I’m so proud of my tomatoes…have lost one but it had nice big fruit before it dehydrated so I will see if they ripen up…have lost 3 garlic…my goodness they like the sunlight…and have cropped the basil, coriander and parsley and dried them…getting there…

You know vg … big boots can be very hard to fill but that dosen’t mean impossible … Whenever there is change there is always adjustment.
I think Pete is fabulous but the time is approaching when he will have to hand over the reins and we just need to trust that they will be turned over to someone who can do another fabulous job. It WILL be different but that is what life is about.
