And to you Droppy.

Was watching Brian Cox’s Wonders of the Universe last night.

I can’t remember where he was exactly, but there were huge rock mounds that had been carefully placed in such a way that the sun would rise next to a different mound for each month from solstice to equinox.

I think he said it was the oldest known astronomical type observatory so far found.

No, not stonehenge.

These were in a straight line and composed of thousands of large rougrocks in a pile

Although Newgrange in Ireland is a lot older (or so the Oirish claim anyway)

Ok I might have been wrong about it being the oldest

Sighting Towers in Ancash State, Peru. The Thirteen Towers of Chankillo were built along a natural ridgeline southeast of the hilltop structure of the Chankillo “Fortress.” Recently the towers have been found to mark an alignment with observation point in a Temple at the foot of the ridge and the rising sun, at points throughout the solar year. Buried caches of offerings around this observation point confirm its importance and use.

Each tower is 6 to 8 feet high and is made of masonry similar to that found at the Chankillo Hill site.

Well you could argue that this is a lot more like an observatory than Newgrange, which just does a single observation (around this time of year).

I’m not sure , but that was one of his points, that it still lined up after all these thousand of years

You could probably make a case that any random rocks/sticks/trees randomly arranged but specifically selected to meet a criteria could be used to go WOW MAN they are aligned with Mars when Jupiter is in the Seventh House.

From a friendly nutjob’s fb yesterday…

The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year when sun’s power is at its height. In ancient times it was believed the pregnant goddess was in full bloom as she nurtured the ripening crops and the god, awaiting fatherhood, was at his prime.
The Element Fire was glorified at this time throughout ancient Europe and bale fires were lit in honor of the transformation of the sun’s force that then begins to wane after midsummer.
Here myths of the battle between the two aspects of the Sun, the Oak King and Holly King bring the perpetual concept of death and rebirth into the changing seasons. After the solstice the Holly King reigns supreme until the Winter Solstice. Again, at this time mock funerals took place in Rome and Greece for the waning Sun as the Druids in other lands gathered mistletoe for scard offerings. Lavender and vervain were used for love magick at midsummer and faeries were thought to be at the peak of their power, like the Sun.

Our land is distant from these ancient times and beliefs but memories of them still live on when people kiss under mistletoe and bring holly into the home at Christmas.

Tomorrow our beautiful planet tilts towards a solar god. Beyond science, beyond all human understanding…magick.

Love Danae the SpellBox Witch

Bewitchment: Burn orange, red or yellow candles in honor of the Sun. Place any crystal of these colors under the sun then while it is still warm hold it to your heart and feel the magick of fire.’
