Very helpful Arts, ta. Especially the “Where Google Street View is Available” one.
This one makes the US look a bit Fourth World:
Countries That Do Not Use the Metric System

And this one makes the British look complete bastards:
The Only 22 Countries in the World Britain Has Not Invaded (not shown: Sao Tome and Principe)

I think you were right.
(Clever blog name too!)
I thought we looked very un-treed on one of those.
And we don’t have paid parental leave. Well, public servants do, but not many other people do.
Interesting that Papadopoulus really is the most common Greek surname, and Smirnov the most common Russian.
I wouldn’t have guessed that Martin is the most common French surname.

Probably many of the “facts” presented are dubious, if examined in detail, but still interesting.
p.s.
Is Smith really the most common surname in Scotland?
>Is Smith really the most common surname in Scotland?
I’m sceptical.

I would probably have picked Dubois.

But Wikipedia agrees with the map:
(Martin) It has remained a popular given name in Christian times, in honor of the Catholic saint Martin of Tours; it is also the most common French surname.

Dubois is no.3 according to:

And most of them are bad Martins.
This site supports the popularity of Smith in Scotland:
http://www.clanscottsociety.org/linked/MostCommonScottishSurnames.html
(followed by that other well known Scottish name, Brown).
Let’s face it since the Smiths were those who shod your horse and the Browns were those who cleaned up after it.
Nice collection of maps! Worth bookmarking.
In the McDonalds map, there’s a problem with Iceland.
An alternative way of looking at the countries invaded by Britain is by looking at the countries that have lost the most territory. Britain has lost the most of any country.
In “most common surnames by country”, are you aware that the most common surname in Australia is “Nguyen”?
In “Earthquakes” map – I didn’t realise that the Australia east and north coast is at THAT huge a risk from Tsunamis.
Nigeria wins the top ranking for bribery. Why am I am not surprised.
In Vegetation map, take special note of Spain, Turkey and India. They are a very high risk of worsening vegetation loss.
In researchers map. That exactly matches what I suspected. See how high South Korea and Singapore are, for instance.
That “imports & exports” map has to be wrong – it says that China doesn’t export anything.
Most of the latitude where the World’s population lives is desert. To see this compare maps 31 and 21 or 34.
“Where 2% of Australia’s Population Lives” – Yep. By the way, it’s very interesting to compare current Australian population densities with pre-European population densities. Pre-European population was densest in the north of Qld, NT and WA.

But surely the Bad Martins would be in Germany.
I wonder where Good Martin and Bad Martin hang out these days.
I don’t really care about Indifferent Martin.
i see good martin on fb occasionally
I like maps.. I like visual representations as opposed to strings of numbers. But I’ve always liked maps.. I have a whole collection from all my travels. If I lay them all out side by side they’d covere the world.

Stephen Wright has a gag about 1:1 maps, but I’ve forgotten the punch line.

Seems his name is actually Steven Wright (but there is a Stephen Wright who has something to do with 1:1 maps).
You can listen to it at a link here:

Turns out the punch line wasn’t that funny anyway :)

Think maybe you missed that it was oil imports and exports. Also that Australia was in the same boat as China in this regard.
Oi. I’m on of the 2% of Australians.
