For the last couple of years I’ve been buying all my music through iTunes. I open it up today and find most of it gone. Just the more recent purchases are there. Any idea how I recover it?

Have you backed up to iCloud or another device?
google suggests that it’s not an uncommon problem, seems to be occurring after an upgrade.

iDunno
Thanks, I’ve got it. I clicked the link “purchased” in iStore and can get it back from the cloud. But this bothers me somewhat. As far as I was aware, that music was in my hard drive. I know I could play it or burn it while not connected to the net. Does this mean that iTunes can access my hard drive and remove stuff without my consent? Is that legal?
No. It’s not gone from your hard drive, it’s just that the software forgot where it put it and can’t retrieve it easily. It’s all still there.
BTW Apple have a clause in their T&Cs where, even though you’ve purchased the music, they still own it and can “take it back” after you die.

It was in itunes. And you do not own the music, you have merely purchased a non-perpetual licence to listen to it.
Do you hear the DRMs, delgiorno?

Dear oh dear.
Just make sure it’s always backed up through iCloud and you should be OK :)

iTunes is of the Devil and nothing good can come of it.
It also raped my cat.

Never had a problem with it.
You don’t own a cat.

That is very true.

True. A cat owns you.
I don’t have the right attitude to have a cat.
My dog and various fish and aquatic invertebrates are much more in tune with my needs.
But iTunes still sucks pretty badly IMHO. I’ll stick with Banshee for my music needs.
iTunes comes with my computer but I still prefer Audion which was the original chosen app for iTunes. One thing that Steve Jobs couldn’t swallow up easily.
